I've always taken it as a player who can be relied upon to be outstanding at the highest level (big 5 leagues, Champions League, World Cup/Euros/Copa America) and Haaland more than fits the bill there. Any club who has got realistic ambitions of winning the Premier League or the Champions League would be happy to have him as a striker. Beyond world class I guess the next favourite term is a generational talent, the guys that get remembered for being brilliant long after they've retired. Thierry Henry was a generational talent, Dennis Bergkamp was a generational talent, Roy Keane, Steven Gerrard, Michael Laudrup, Ruud Gullit, Kenny Dalglish (etc) were too. Haaland has potential to be in that bracket of players if he carries on. Beyond that you've got all time greats like Pele, Maradona, Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Jack Grealish. Haaland isn't there just yet. For me top 5 players in the world in his position Of which he of course is Or imagine a football version of the pro bowl, 2 teams, 11 men per side best players in the world, all 22 players subbed at half time, so 44 players used in total would he play in that game? Again of course he would

PaulC
Defining the GOAT is hard as peoples opinions differ but the greatest strikers ever is quantifiable. We have been blessed with having so many of the great strikers around at the same time in this era and Haland is the latest

They seem to be a dying breed, which is why Haaland is so refreshing. Most of the best forwards now are a Salah/Mane wide forward type. Compared to the 90's/00's where every top team had a top class #9. You go to a major tournament and even some of the smaller countries were kind of scary because they had a world class striker

The 1st 2 had incredible stats from deeper that the No.9 had to be more defensive and Drogba meant that strikers had to do everything for the team. Players like Darren Bent, Jermaine Defoe effective goalscorers became a bit player They are starting to rise up again since Lewandowski has hit incredible numbers in the last few years

Drogba definitely revolutionized that. I remember Darren Bent basically becoming obsolete when Benteke came in. I wonder how some of the great fox in the box strikers from the 90's would fare now. Still think they'd do alright.
Rino8 Posted February 18, 2021 Visiting Supporter Share Posted February 18, 2021 You'll never see another Darren Bent type at the highest level again, thankfully. Unless you're Inzaghi I'd rather not have players actively looking to not be involved in the game.

Kind of getting tired of these robotic, Jack of All Trades players that permeate top level football now.

Gary Lineker was a very good one.

Maybe vs Fulham 1 goal from outside of the box meaning his other 149 all came from in the box

What if there are ten players who are all on the same kind of level, who do you choose? Do you have higher quotas for central defence or central midfield where players can be used more interchangeably? Are you going to suggest, say someone like Thomas Muller isn't world class because there are five forwards in world football you'd take over him if you are putting a fantasy squad together?
