Agree. But we won't stay up with Steer in goal. No sentiment needed.

I’d sell Steer & Kalinic if we could to get Butland in .... maybe offer them Steer ? He earned his contract extension for sure but I also believe it was about protecting an asset  just as much...

I just don't think we are in the market for a £20m keeper.

If and its a big 'if' - we sell Kalinic for around £5m - we might go £10m for a replacement.

I don't ever think we were in for Butland.

I think we are after the best goalkeeper we could possibly get.  I think many people realise that a goalkeeper is probably the key position and it makes even a bigger difference when you are a bottom half of the team.  Even for Liverpool, the difference of having Alisson Becker last season was huge.  So for us, that will be underdogs, in most games next season and be bombarded most games, we need the best goalkeeper we can get.

In terms of whether that was a 20m or 10m goalkeeper was never in my thoughts, it was about the best we could get.  Butland for some reason was being valued by reports at 20m but for me I dont care who it is, we have to get the best we can get i.e. who would come to us.  If that is 20m Butland or 10m Heaton or whoever, I trust who Smith wants.  It did seem for some long (according to the press and ITKs) that it was Butland.

I think we might have to go into next season with players in some positions not as strong as we would like - but there are just too many holes to plug. We perhaps could have spent 25m on Butland - but then not been able to finance Mings or a partner for Mings etc

Steer always seems to rise to the challenge - and might once again surprise a few people

I hope that we can still get a deal over the line for Butland. I think we all agree we needed to sign Mings and he was worth the money given how important he was to us, but Butland is an established England goalkeeper and I fail to see how £23-25mil is too much for him. If we get say Hegazy and Trezeguet for £20mil combined, plus a decent DM for a reasonable fee, I think we could still potentially go after Butland. If not him, someone else would still need to come in I think.

As much as I love Steer for helping us get promoted, I just don't see him dealing with shots from the likes of Aguero and Kane. We need a top level goalkeeper to gain us 10-15 points next season and I think Butland would be the sort of signing that would do that.

I agree with you, I think the difference between Butland and Steer next season may well be a dozen points.

There will be more shots aimed at the corners of the goal by better class strikers,

I think we have to fill positions in order of weakness. The marginal gain of signing a specialist defensive midfielder is bigger than signing a better goalkeeper - i.e. will be worth more points over the course of the season. Steer is a gamble, and I'd prefer Butland, but I don't think splashing on Butland will keep us up, if it's at the expense of fixing our glaring outfield weaknesses.

I can still see us going back in on this one. Stoke have already shown their hand by signing a replacement for Butland already. They will need the money to strengthen the squad in other areas so hopefully we will just see this out and pick him up for £15m or so.

Agreed. This is all feels part of a bartering process from us, and leave them hanging for a while and pick him up for less later in the window.

I thought it was bargaining but looking at how much we’ve spent and the upper limits of what we can spend I just don’t think we can spend anywhere close to what they will be looking for.

Think this one is dead personally unless it’s a loan with future buy clause.

Wouldn't surprise me to see our goalkeeping options remain the same next season.  Steer, Kalinić, Nyland.

If all are fit I am fine with that. We have more pressing positions we need to spend our remaining money on.

I fully understand your perspective but I think the same but about the Goalkeeper instead of DM.   As I have mentioned a number of times over the last few weeks, I really feel the GK position is so key for next season and for me DM is only second to GK position in weakness.

We are going to be bombarded next season as underdogs in most games.

  • Making a key save gives confidence to the team;
  • keeping a clean sheet gives confidence to the team;
  • the team not having to start every game knowing they are likely to have to score two goals to win a game
  • strikers needing to score when they know ever shot is crucial. As we are going to at least need goal in every game to get a point
  • somebody at the back that co-ordinates and manages the back line and the back line can totally trust that man in goal
  • Us Villa fans can turn quite quickly in a game, the longer we keep the opposing team out the louder and passionate we are, which helps the team
  • Keeper makes a mistake, it's a goal.  Any other player can maybe get away with in.

I can go on and I fully agree a DM is vital for us and we really really need that role but for me it's always second to a new GK.  Defence is so key for us next season and for me that always starts with a GK and now (mings is signed) a DM is crucial and it has to be really good signing.  I like Steer but I dont think he's our No.1 for the Premiership season ahead even in the interim or even if it means we dont get the DM we want.   Fully understand teams flying through our midfield currently because of the lack of DM and that is a major problem but for me the GK is more important.

I believe in those above, its not the shower of shite of yesteryear, it seems that everybody in a position of power knows what we need, and are doing there upmost to achieve it, it's not Steve Bruce and Co anymore, we'll be fine.

If we were talking about replacing Nyland with Alisson then I would agree with you. We're talking about Steer and Butland. Steer is not a complete muppet, and while he's not the most gifted shot stopper in the world, he does pull out decent saves and I think he comes across as a stronger personality than Butland.

I would obviously see Butland as an upgrade, but you're suggesting Steer will cost us 2 goals a match, which can't be true. Football is a low scoring game, and most of a keeper's work is basic stuff. It's rare that a game is decided by a world class save. Clean sheets say more about the team than the keeper.

Edit: just to be clear, I still want us to sign a better keeper, and I think it will be important. I just think DM is such a glaring weakness at the moment that it needs sorting if we're to have any chance of surviving.

Yeah, that’s my thoughts too. I don’t think a loan would suit Stoke though as they need the money to plough in the team/FFP deficits.

I think they’ve priced him out of a move essentially, if I was Butland I would be fuming. A chance to play in the PL for a young exciting team, and a chance to catch Southgate’s eye - especially with Euros next summer...
