Racism Part two

I should add that Cloud Atlas did (and does) get some backlash for it's use of 'yellowface'. But I think it escapes a lot of that because it was artistically justifiable - they didn't just cast Westerners as Japanese people because that was easy/marketable/inherent racism, they have the theme of souls repeating that they try to show by having the same cast play roles across 6 stories.

It being an independently funded film helped as well. I don't think you could get a studio to make that film, they couldn't in 2010 and they definitely couldn't now.

And you can kinda see why...

Is it OK to pretend to be Japanese if its so utterly convincing that you would never really know, like this guy?

On the subject of the absence of physical characteristics lacking in white actors, pretending to be another race, there is an hilarious story, which might be apochryphal, that during the filming of Zulu, that a group of white guys were blacked-up as extras in a crowd-scene, and the black people on the set all pissed themselves laughing because the white guys' saggy arses all looked so wrong.

I actually thought the Ghost in the Shell character was an AI in a robot body rather than being Japanese, but it's a bit tone deaf to cast Johanssen anyway given the setting is Tokyo.

And the fact that the character is called Motoko Kusanagi

There's a long history of Eastern actors and actresses having plastic surgery to widen their eyes as a way of making themselves more 'bankable'.

Also, cream for whitening your skin is a big thing in SE/NE Asia. Lighter skin is seen as desirable and a sign of wealth and prosperity.

I believe the same in India as well as darker skin is associated with outdoor manual work and lighter skin means a better indoor job.

It’s why the posh europeans would use lead paste to whiten their skin, to emphasis they didn’t need to go outside to work.

I think I’ve done something which could be misconstrued today. I’m probably overthinking it but I have to admit in todays climate I’m a little bit worried.

Backstory: Chap with his dog (staffie thats never on a lead) who he repeatedly lets shit everywhere (road/paths/grass) and never picks it up. Huge poops every time. He doesn’t live where the dog keeps crapping near our house but about a 2 minute walk away by the main road. I’ve reported it to the council using the online form and I’ve described the dog and then described himself as I don’t know his name or where he lives exactly. I said he was a black man with long dreadlocks purely for identification purposes if they need to find him but I’m worried it could be taken out of context by someone reading the complaint form.

Is he a black man with long dreadlocks,? it’s like saying bald fella with a ginger beard. No idea what you’re concerned about, you described somebody that is all. The sooner they find him and sort it the better

It has to be said that when someone I know made a complaint about someone to the police, and described the person as a 'traveller', which was how the person had described themselves, the police told him he was being racist.

I'd be more worried posting it on here than to the council. One or 2 will be along shortly to tear you a new one. 🤣

Is it less offensive if its a farcical situation in a comedy?

Yeah, RDJ's character in Tropic Thunder for example. It's not offensive at all because it's satirizing the use of blackface and the hilariously weird lengths some people would go to justify it. As always context is important.

I remember whilst channel hopping  for Asian porn on the hotel room tv in Cambodia , seeing a TV advert where this woman goes for a job interview and gets turned down , buys this magic formula skin whitening cream and goes back for the interview next day and gets the job
