Dean Smith

The biggest issue I have with Smith and indeed any manager is when you cant see what the game plan is. We have seen countless PL sides with limited squads over achieve because of their tactics/work rate etc overcoming their talent shortcomings.

This Villa side has talent or so called talent throughout the squad yet how many players have improved their reputation this season outside of Martinez?

Bad results can be excused when you can see what the team is trying to do but I have no idea what we're trying to do or how we're trying to do it.

Finally, the death knell for any manager is when shambolic defensive errors/decisions start creeping in and we're having them mutiple times every match. Its a total mess and you dont win many games by needing to score 3-4 goals. We're also looking toothless up top and now seem to have a bit of squad disillusion thrown in for good measure.

The writing is on the wall.

Something about the whole coaching overhaul suddenly happening and players all losing their heads after what seemed like such a tight knit bunch of players just doesn't sit right to me. Shakespeare seems like a good bet as one of the reasons why to me, admittedly based on no inside knowledge, something has gone on behind the scenes.

Shakespeare was behind the shift to the more direct, counterattacking style that worked well early last season but which fell apart with no Grealish for the ball to stick to. Now we've also brought in Danks to coach more a technical game, and there appears to be a real confusion in the side as to how they're supposed to be playing..... which is precisely what Deano should be sorting out, but he's just too passive.

Everything that could've made life more difficult happened today.

The thing I've always liked Smith for is his analysis of a match. He normally calls it like it is.

However, at Arsenal, there was a little pop at the penalty and if the same happens tonight it will be a sign of the pressure he's under IMO.

We need to find a different answer from the squad we have. Maybe it's time for a youngster to get the nod or Samson. We can't continue to not compete in games , we looked like we lacked courage to fight until the perceived injustice sparked us into life. It's not good enough.

Brighton are only 5 clear of us still and we play them soon.

Not sure Potter will leave them mid season though, perhaps if Spurs approach him if they dump Nuno.

It might be only 5 points right now, but they are in a different world to us. A side well on their way up, versus a side skidding into the relegation zone.

Finally get to see a 4-3-3 and we already have a pretty bad 3 CMs in there made worse with Ashley Young somehow coming into it. Young is a wing back/full back, has he ever been a CM? Why is he playing him there?

I said pre-game dropping Mings for Hause is a mistake, thats the biggest mistake Smith made for me. Hause isn't even a Championship player, he gets done on the ground every time, I can understand throwing him in v Burnley but not here. At fault for a goal, could have been sent off and then also put Konsa in a spot where he did get sent off.

If Potter would come to us we should get him.

Let’s think about this logically:

1) We lost our best player for the last 20 years

2) £100m doesn’t touch the sides when it comes to replacing a player like Grealish

3) The PL is rigged in favour of the media’s preferred clubs and as much as we bitch and moan, we aren’t one of those clubs and never will be - we aren’t in London or the North West.

4) Who can we attract that is better than Dean - no-one.

The best shot we have is to stick with Dean, bring through the kids and accept that we are a mid table premiership team and the game is rigged so we have to stay there.

Unfortunately the closest teams like us are allowed to get to the big time is being proud that we developed the players that go on to win the CL with Man City, Chelsea and Newcastle next.

Modern football is f**ked!

You started off saying 'Let's think about this logically' and it all went downhill from there

You really think this is some grand reveal, don't you?

Some people have mates.

My Grandfather was an Albion fan, most of the family are Albion, my father in law was an Albion season ticket holder. I've had a pint with all of them.

Unless we end up in a relegation battle (unlikely), which would be a clear sign of moving backwards, I would give him until at least the end of this season...[snip]...The only thing that would make me pull the trigger earlier is if he loses the players.

He seems to have lost the dressing room.

Yes, that's what concerns me, and why my position is starting to change only a week later...

Excellent post, by the way.

Add to that a set piece coach turning us into a Tony pulis side everytime we get a bastard throw in.

Bringing in set piece specialists and train to play like Tony Pulis ‘s team I am sure will go down well with the technical gifted players like Buendia / Bailey or Martinez that's train with Argentina national team with players like Messi/ Lantauro etc....

I think I speak for us all when I say I really, really wanted the Smith dream to continue. It was just too good to be true - the progress under Dean and Jack, two Villa fans.

But Jack left, and exposed some of Dean's tactical flaws. He's had bad runs every season, usually coinciding with a Grealish injury. Form would pick up when the talisman returned, but this time he isn't returning.

Then you look at Brentford. He came here because the belief was he over achieved with Brentford. Christ, that assertion looks silly now!

I love the bloke. He's a Villan through and through and I wish him nothing but the best. But we've outgrown him. We need someone capable of getting a tune out of a very high quality squad of players at the highest level. We need consistency.

I'm surprised he's lasted this long. Our owners would have wanted a 'name', not Dean from the Midlands. This is their opportunity to twist, but it has to be the right one. A gamble could see us in danger of the drop. A top manager could see us push on.

Either way, I think it's time. Lange has signed a lot of this squad and they seem unhappy. Will his voice make the difference this season that sees Dean gone? Times up unfortunately, but not on bad terms. I still love the guy. Just not here.

Who comes in next is anyone's guess.

Haven't they drawn with Norwich recently?

If we make the change soon enough I'm still confident we'll finish above likes of them at least. Fun fact but we've won a premier league game more recently than they have.
