    Unai Emery

Scary to think he's even ahead of George Ramsay... If he gets half of Ramsay's hardware haul, we're all going to be very happy.

    Unai Emery

I can think of several reasons that a manager would leave. Let's analyze regarding Unai... 1. More money: Certainly other clubs have more revenue and can afford to pay him more per year. However, I think our owners know what we have and will come up with the money to keep him, even if it means spending less on players. Also, you have to think of money over a career, not just money per year, which brings me to the next point... 2. Stability of job: Clubs like Bayern, Barcelona, and Real Madrid tend to chew up managers and spit them out quickly. Unai has already been through that with Arsenal and PSG. He could make more money at Villa because he will likely last longer at Villa. 3. Resources: No dispute here...other clubs can spend more money on players for him. 4. Control: I doubt that any big club is going to give him the kind of control he has now. Certainly not Barcelona or Bayern or Real Madrid. So, on the whole? I see him staying.
  3. I watched the extra time between Olympiakos and Fenerbahce and wasn't much impressed by either. Olympiakos is the dominant power in Greek football (47 league titles all time compared to 40 for everyone else combined), but after a run of 19 titles in 21 years, they've won "only" 3 of the last 6. They are currently 4th in a close 4-way title race. In short, they've regressed to the level of the rest of Greek football. I'm not saying that it will be easy, but a 4th place Premier League team should not lose to them over two legs.
  4. My opinion on Cash has been pretty consistent. He's a solid player who does a lot of good things, but he has his flaws. If we find the right player, upgrades are out there.
  5. I only saw about 30 minutes of the match, but from what I saw, other than giving up the penalty (which was pretty bad!), Cash played OK today.
  6. Is he crazy or calculated? I think that he's a little of both. Most of the best goalkeepers (whether in football or ice hockey) have that edge to them...
  7. I would prefer to see Martinez mocking Mbappe after Mbappe moves to Real Madrid next year and we beat Real Madrid in the CL final next year.
  8. It's not good, but Olsen has shown signs of improvement this year, and Emi will be back for the second leg (when any shootout will take place), so I'm not going to panic.
  9. Agreed. Ollie has taken leaps and bounds forwards this year. Power still is not his strength, but that was a great penalty.
  10. Agreed...I don't think that he was quite as bad as some on here are making out. Mediocre, but not awful.
  11. BEST. IN. THE. WORLD. Though hats off to Chevalier, who was also excellent tonight.
  12. Match thread seems to have locked early. I think that Emi was cautioned. The laws state: "warnings and cautions issued to players and team officials during the match are not carried forward into penalties (penalty shoot-out)"
  13. Hard to believe...they just said that our last European shootout was against Inter Milan back in the 1990s. I remember that well...
  14. Might substitute DIgne or even Ollie for Rogers, but good list.
  15. He did what he should have. 99% of the time that goes in. That save reminded me of Banks on Pele.
  16. He and Pau have been our best defensive pairing this year. You can't blame either goal tonight on him. First was Digne's fault for not seeing the player who scored behind him. Second was Cash misjudging the ball's flight by about 6 inches.
  17. Far post runs behind him have been a weakness for a long time.
  18. I don't know if we'll score, but if we get one, I'm pretty confident we'll get two.
  19. We're having trouble progressing the ball. That's something that tactical changes should fix. It's Unai time.
  20. The game is played differently on the continent, and I think that the Conference League has been, and will continue to be, good training for the CL. The first Legia Warsaw match was an education in itself. Even if we qualify for the CL, I don't expect to win it the first (recent) time. Let's get there and get some experience.
  21. I disagree with this. On Saturday, we passed the ball into tight spaces in the box and, when the player realized he wasn't going to get a good shot, we recycled the ball back out. More to the point, once you get in the final third, I see nothing wrong with taking chances and losing the ball. Clear-cut opportunities are rare in this game. Sometimes you have to take chances. The reason Man City are so fearsome isn't that they never lose the ball; they do so in the final third rather often (not so much in midfield). It's just that they press so well when they do lose it. When Guardiola came to England, he added a Klopp-style high press to his system.
