Well, he did though didn't he. Nothing to do with pressure?

He was being a big soft lad and didn't like he was getting booted by Burnley. Just like he didn't want to head the ball in against Everton in case he got hurt.

Great pen today. Hope he can gain some confidence from today and participate for us in general play. Lacks nothing technically or physically.

It was Southampton. Wanted to save himself for the cup final 8 days later.

Good on penalties though! Problem will be he might not be on the pitch next time we get one so debate of who takes the next one can still go on although DS said post match it would've been Jack if AEG didn't fancy it so that's the likely answer.

A **** excellent penalty.

He's never going to be more than a squad player for us. He is technically good, but inconsistent, he has some skill but he's not a super tricky winger, he can finish but he's not composed or clinical enough to be a true forward in the Salah mould, and he isn't the terrier that Trez has become because he's not going to run himself into the ground all match doing donkey work.

He's always had games where you could just tell he wasn't up for it that day, at which point he was useless. And he's had a few games were you felt he was keen to go off.

Despite that for the time being he's useful as an option, particularly off the bench, because of his qualities - he can finish, he can cross, he's got a decent attacking instinct - but it's clear the club has moved beyond his grasp already.

Agree to disagree.

Yes. Same way he didn't cast Wes aside when he pretended to be knocked out in the same game. Smith far too sensible and prepared to try and improve players.

He still the best attacking sub we had today. Pleased he could contribute.

Of course.

My favourite is the theory McGinn is finished and needs replacing every time he has a bad game (which have come along far too often in the last 12 months).

Fair enough. I agree with you on a lot of things but not this one.

I don't think anyone is saying mcginn is finished. He just needs to be 4ested more often. And it is true we need another midfielder. I think we have solid depth but the fact is both nakamba and hourihane are limited on the ball and in possession as specialists. We could do with a player who we can rotate with mcginn, barkley and Luiz more easily.

Took that pen well, last time he took one he buried it against city, apart from that didn’t do much when he came on but not complaining after getting the winner

Held the ball up well for cash's Cross to grealish at the back post. But I think unless our fullbacks overlap it becomes incredibly difficult for our wingers to impact the game as they are trying to beat 2 or 3 men every time the get the ball on the flank.

Ramsey?

Ramsey isn't physical enough or good enough defensively. If we sign a player they need to be different enough to luiz/mcginn so hopefully they will be a big strong bloke. Ideally someone in the mold of sander berge. We should have signed him last year. 15 mil for him what a steal.

El Ghazi is a good player who’s just a bit lacking in his all round game to play the role Smith wants, and not talented enough to play the CR7 role that he’d like to play (and can play at a lower level).

Similar to Hourihane, a good player to have around the squad, because he does have some quality, but never going to be nailed on for a start.

Credit to Smith that he gets performances out of fringe players. Shows how good he is at keeping a good team spirit going. So different from the bomb squad days.

Wouldn't be averse to starting him against Burnley on the right. Might have fired himself back into the team.

Burnley are exactly the kind of team I think he'll struggle against tbh. He doesn't like it when teams get physical, I don't think he'll get in to the game.

If this is your view, what does it say about the rest of our players? How weak are Grealish, Targett, McGinn etc when a fringe player takes respobsibility on a massive moment like this?

Anwar showed such mental toughness today I have rarely seen in a Villa player. The narrative you promote was proven false.

Mings and Grealish wanted him to roll off the pitch for treatment when we were defending a corner.  Effectively giving Southampton a man advantage at a corner for no reason.  Anwar did the right thing then imo in staying down if he was going to get subbed.

He's the penalty taker and did his job. Did it well.

Nothing to do with previous incidents.
