So who is going to be the main 2 challengers at the top of the league this year?

who are those 2 teams we need to equal or beat for points across the season?

Well on current and recent showings we are behind

Reading

Leeds

ShefW

Fulham

Derby

Norwich

Cardiff

Brentford

PNE

and

Boro

Hull

and Sunderland all ended last season with more pts than we accumilated during our last attempt at that level

So there'll be more than 2 teams results that we'll have to better

I would go for 2 from Fulham, Leeds and Sheffield Weds.

Not two but every club in our division.;)

So the "promotion charge 2017/8" thread has become the "Bruce out pt 2" thread.

Now there's a shock.

The Promotion charge depends on

1 Tonys investment

2 new recruits

3 outgoing players

4 managers ability

5 coaches application

6 player/team performances

if any of those factors are not successfull we will have difficulty claiming a promotion spot.

so discussing any of those factors is perfectly legitimate. Bruce's effect on the team probably being the most deciding factor.

So whether you like it or not, certain factors and opinions of them will appear here and rightly so.

And we have all enjoyed reading your full, rounded and balanced assessment off all 6 factors in this thread. :P

Reading as well?

Likely play-off contenders for me along with Derby, Boro and Norwich (but I thought the same about Brighton last season). ;)

Don't forget 7 Swansea swimming.

Boro should go back up given the huge cash difference and the fact that they run well as a club. I think Wednesday are going to go up and Leeds could be strong again. Unless  Sunderland  and Hull get sold I can't see them going straight back up.  I think Reading and Fulham will struggle to do as well next year. Norwich and Derby will be decent and I hope to god 'arry does not do a good job for the noses.  Ultimately we can't worry about the opposition- we just need to up our game and be consistent next year and we should get a play off spot at least.

No but I feel they all have brighter futures ahead

you really think Southgate has a bright future? he made a mess of Boro and couldnt get a very talented Under 21 side out of the group stage of the Euros

Is that what you really want ?

Watford and Southampton have both done it to decent success in recent times.

Edit: I would actually include the manager in the three stages plan Wyness is making a big thing of.

Manager 1 is a promotion specialist who you think is reasonably capable of getting us out of this division within a period of time. That's why they appointed SB.

Manager 2 is then someone to stabilise us in the prem, get us playing good football and feared again by prem teams and finishing 8th or 9th. Eddie Howe?

Manager 3 is then someone who can then have a good go at getting us into that top 4 or winning that mythical trophy. Could still be Eddie Howe or someone in from abroad...Pellegrini, Mancini?

As much as I defend him now I really struggle to see much in SB's previous time that he can be manager of stage 2-3 for us and think it would be a waste of time if he got seasons and god knows how much cash to spend/waste. Still let's actually get there first.

Its all a guessing game, but I wouldn't under estimate the ability of SB to bond the group and return the team spirit.

That alone can make a significant improvement.....The stability is not a myth it has an intangible effect on everyone and it can affect players performance and when that happens with many the play starts to get better as a team.

i do not envisage SB abandoning his style of  4 promotions, but i do see the swagger returning and the points accumulating.

To expect SB to attempt to play expansive football, i think is wishful thinking, but i think we will change and the mental damage  that start of last season had is far reaching and i do not expect that to drag us down.

I think we will be ok.....However, i do not expect to get 1/2 place, i hope to....but i think play offs we will get.

I completely disagree with the notion that we should currently have a manager who we think can compete for the top honours in Europe.

That just isn't realistic at all right now, and isn't relevant at all to the title of this thread, getting out of the Championship.

I don't think for a second that Bruce is capable of taking us to a Premier League title, but that sort of thing is still several years and a lot of building away. What I do believe he can do is make us really difficult to beat and get us out of the Championship, which is step 1.

Do you accept that making the play offs is good enough?
