to be fair i would say that he is their best CB and it comes off them getting rid of david luiz, theres probably as much as a £5m a year saving in the wage bill, its also a crazy deal but he does make them a better team

their central defense is white, holding, pablo mari, gabriel and then saliba and the greek guy out on loan, not sure when Arsenal last had a proper top quality CB maybe vermaelen and mertesacker at times but they were inconsistent, the ones they've had for the last 10 years have been laughably bad, expensive internationals too

makes our mings deal look a brilliant piece of business though

As funny as these reactions are, it's just a pre-season kickabout . . .

So true Hanoi. If you'd watched the game Arsenal should have won comfortably. Boyles goal was a massive howler from a new keeper where he tried to fly hack the ball clear and missed completely leaving Boyle with a tap in and our second was at least a yard offside........no VAR  here  😀 The penalty also should have been retaken as our keeper didn't have either foot left on the line as the Arsenal guy struck the ball.

So just a kick about with many subs and both sides will get better but naturally we won't get near their level.

Still good to be back at the ground / game after 15 months.🙂

Seems like a lot of people worrying about Covid, but personally I can't wait to get back to a packed VP! Glad you enjoyed the game.

Not even a special season either

Was named Brighton's player of the season, got into the England squad - has basically improved season on season and will be a very good signing for Arsenal IMO.

Newport County are my 'second team' due to my Dad supporting them and I go to a fair few Newport games each season.  They had White on loan maybe 4 years ago or so and he looked absolute class.  Obviously League Two level, but loans are incredibly regular down there and he still stood out as having a real future in the game.  £50m is a big fee, but he could easily be their first choice centre back for a decade.

It makes pretty much everyone’s business look brilliant

It’s similar money to what United are reportedly paying for Verane from Real Madrid

Latest price touted for Varane to Utd is £50m+ so not sure what you're on about here.

£50m for Ben White. Not even that - just shows where they are as a club they need to pay through the nose for average Brighton defenders.

Club is absolutely dusted as a mild PL force. They are done.

Unfortunately they are still a London club with a 60,000 stadium which means they can still draw in cash that most teams can dream off even if they are dreadfully mismanaged.

You're right Zatman, but it may not be such a daft purchase from an economic standpoint for Arsenal. There's no doubt it's a huge amount of money, but if / when they complete the deal for £50m quid, Ben White becomes a £50m player. One that's now playing for a decent team. There's nothing to suggest he'll be a disaster as he's a good player, he's obviously familiar with the league and there's minimal risk that he won't settle in London. Let's not forget he's only 23 too.

A couple of decent seasons under the belt, and he's now a £70m player, should Man City / Man U / Chelsea come calling. If they don't, Arsenal have a good, young, England international in their defence for years to come.

Whilst you overpay massively for British players, that premium is similarly passed on if they're sold. Same with Dwight McNeil. If he's bought for £40m and continues his trajectory, how much will he be worth at 23 / 24?

Should there be no problems, he will sign a £120,000-per-week deal with the north London giants. That is double what he earns at Brighton and will make him the sixth highest-paid player at Arsenal.

Ten Arsenal players will be earning £100,000-per-week or more when White joins the club.

They used to be so well run… now the scattergun approach to transfers and wages is hitting them hard …

That's got to be a jump from around £30-40k a week

But to be fair as has been discussed elsewhere when you have players on £250k a week it drags everyone else up, 1st choice CB replacing a guy who was paid £185k a week so of course his agent can make those kind of demands

Nothing more than a decent CB. Madness.

Versatile too. Almost as good as a DCM. Young. English. Full England international. Brighton don't really need to sell. 50m sounds about right.

I mean Ollie Watkins went from about £10k/w at Brentford to supposedly £70k/w with us, and he wasn't in the England set up.

Straight from the championship too, Ben White now has PL experience, very good player. Would love him at villa, not as good defender as Konsa but much better at taking the ball out from defense either with his passing or running. This is the part that Konsa needs to improve and why he was ommited from England squad.

White was only picked over Ezri because he can cover DCM aswell. Southgate clearly highlighted multi positional players were selected. Look past Rice and Phillips and he was next inline for that spot.

Yep, it's not about what wage he was on or where he's coming from it's the wage structure of the first team 11

If he's going to play 38 games a season guaranteed starter then he's going to be on or around similar money as the other players of that role

We can't say to Ollie congrats mate were tripling your wages... But you're still less than half of the other guys who are of the same importance... That doesn't work

That's also why we can't just go out and get say coutinho this summer and pay him £200k a week, it's not about whether or not we can afford its about the impact it would have on our structure
