The only thing in his favour is he wasn't the biggest culprit. Gabby was useless and Ayew was verging on criminal. Judging a number 10s performance when we went a man down after 17 minutes. That'll do me. Bet you couldn't wait to have a go.. Fwiw I thought he was good behind the front two before Ayew cemented our relegation. Was game over after that. He was basically a left back after that.
ozvillafan Posted February 2, 2016 VT Supporter Share Posted February 2, 2016 We looked dangerous in the first 15 minutes - even with Gabby up front! That's down to Gil being central, for mine. Once Ayew departed having Gil wide right completely nullified his impact.
Zatman
what does he actually do? one of the worst attacking midfielders I have seen
Thug
I'm surprised Garde didn't take him off for Clark. I know defending isn't Gil's main asset so I'm not holding it against him, but a goal coming from that side of the pitch had been brewing all second half. This. He did make the odd defensive mistake, but he's a **** number 10, he's not a left back. It's to be expected when you force an attacker to defend for 90 minutes that he might make the odd mistake. I'm not sure how he's to blame for the second goal. Didn't he take the corner?

Wainy316
Should only be played in the hole. When the midfield went flat he should have been replaced. Mind you that was one hell of a weak bench last night.

tonyh29
He's in the Grealish category for me .... has some ability but flatters to deceive and doesn't deliver a lot the only question is (like Grealish ) ... if its the player or the players around him and the way he's being asked to play that are the problem Edited February 3, 2016 by tonyh29

We depratelt need a driving midfielder , in the Ian Taylor mould , and one of them other things , I think you call them strikers .
VillaChris
Big performance needed from him on Saturday. What's the excuse if we play a narrow 4 and he gets a free role off the striker and still dosen't do anything? For me he's better in small doses, impact sub. Zatman
for me he is a nice player to watch, be good in a team when 2 or 3 nil up but his end product is woeful and his lack of tracking back has cost us a few times now

Nothing, 'cos he had been subbed off. When that statement was born as part of a much longer post, it was referring to West Ham's 2nd real attempt at goal (the Tomkins one). But I think I got a bit carried away in the editing.

Popular Post KSV
I honestly dont know what some of his critics are watching. He is clearly our best player. Yes he has a few bad games (in our side.. who doesnt)... but everyone upset we didnt buy a striker.. what does that tell you? what end product will he supply Gestede or Sinclair? The statue that doesnt move. Gil will be a better play when plays with players closer to his level. You even saw glimpses at Leicester when Grealish and Gil were carving them up and linking well. At the moment hes the creative player in a side coming last and severely lacking confidence (As he would be going through the same confidence issue). He finally played in the role behind the two strikers against West Ham and we were all over them. We looked likely and then Ayew got carded and we had to move him to left midfield to help out defence. I just dont understand how he can get criticism for his defending abilities. Thats not his game.. As said above.. he was better off being replaced at that point. Some of the points in this thread had criticized his work rate which is clearly wrong.. he works very hard.. he may not be good at defending or tracking runs but he certainly works hard. Apparantly he doesnt have a right foot.. yet he delivered two excellent crosses with his right last week.. His size shouldnt matter if he is played further up the field.. Sherwood stupidly played him in a midfield three.. On the wing he can do a job.. but he will be much better in the hole behind the strikers. I hope he gets another run there against Norwich. Yet again you look upfront and he will have Gabby and Sinclair to work with. I hope Remi plays Grealish and Gil behind Gabby personally.
