He's pedestrian and reactionary, more and more plays like he has to make up for slight mistakes in positioning rather than anticipating and reading the game. He's already on fairly big wages and turning 30in a few months. He's a good tackler but I have a feeling he's one of those who'll have a pretty rapid decline in quality in the coming season or 2. He'll hopefully grow into a more progressive passer as he spends more time in the team, and he theoretically allows his fellow midfielders to play more aggressively. Especially as we like to throw the press off by pretending to be in for a team mate (linked with King when we wanted Wilson for example). Also Alvarez can play across the front 3 l, which gives us flexibility, and would still mean Wes gets some games.
