Popular Post HanoiVillan Posted February 10, 2020 Popular Post Share Posted February 10, 2020 I couldn't see another thread on our U23 goalie, who is now being talked up by the club (in an article that suggests we may be getting rid of Sarkic in the summer as well): 'A really good chance' - The Aston Villa rookie making a statement in training 'Aston Villa have a real gem of a goalkeeper making a big impression during first-team training sessions. That's the glowing endorsement given to young Finnish stopper Viljami Sinisalo by goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler. The 18-year-old is currently the Villa under-23 No.1 and, as it stands, fourth choice behind Pepe Reina, Orjan Nyland and Matija Sarkic. Sinisalo, a Finland international, was snapped up from his hometown club FC Espoo in the summer of 2018 - and his progression has been vast. "He's a young Finnish goalkeeper who's been around the first team," Cutler explained during Villa TV interview. "He's very calm when he's stepped in and doesn't look out of place. "It's important to keep them around the environment. If you see a young goalkeeper like Viljami who's got a really good chance to accelerate his learning, he needs to be training with the likes of Pepe Reina, Orjan, Tom and Jed. It will really help him in terms of what he needs to be doing, and to learn" Sinisalo put in a commanding performance against West Brom's under-23s at Bodymoor last week, pulling off a string of saves to keep the score at 1-0 in the first half. As for Villa's young goalkeepers, it's full Montenegro international Sarkic who's currently travelling with the first-team on match-days, taking the place of Lovre Kalinic who departed on loan during January. "Mati has come through and we sent him out on loan to Livingston to get games where he done very well," Cutler added. "It's difficult right now for the young goalkeeper because of how many very, very good goalies we have at senior level." Sarkic's deal expires in the summer and it's thought Sinisalo could be the man Villa want to stick around instead, and Cutler said: "We want to be the best goalkeeping department in the Midlands, if not the country. Goalkeepers through the system and into the first-team has to be the way forward. "We've got detailed goalkeeping coaches who believe we can do that. We don't want to be out spending millions and millions. Wasn’t Michael Oakes the last keeper who consistently made the bench/first team who came through the youth set up? Myhill had a successful career but erm not with us lol. Clutching at straws here. I suppose it’s comparable to most Prem’ teams tho: which other teams consistently produce excellent goalkeepers for their first team rather than going out and buying them? I'd have liked Sarkic to have been our cup keeper tbh as i think he needs games to push on. Seems a strange call to recall him from loan and then sign another senior keeper. Dont understand the point of recalling him if we plan to let him leave in the summer. Most of the time, we can help develop them, and they can be a cheap number or two, or sell them on for a modest profit. Posted February 11, 2020 Moderator Share Posted February 11, 2020 It's difficult for keepers - outfield players tend to start their "proper" careers at nineteen or twenty and play from there, but a keeper is still a babby until he's in his mid-twenties - because of that, they tend to move more when they're young and not end up at a bigger club until they're older.
