I wonder how much more energy is being consumed now that everyone is stuck in their cold houses, using electricity and internet etc all day long.

You can check this out yourself.

The “funny” thing about electricity is that every second of every day the amount produced has to match the amount used because it can’t really be stored. That means there’s real time data of electricity demand available publicly online. I only know the exact sites for Ireland but it looks like gridwatch.co.uk makes it available for the UK 👍

In the summer we normally have to pay other countries to take our excess electric I think

With Octopus Agile the consumer gets paid when there is excess power on the grid, 99% during the night. Its been know that you can get paid up to 5p/kwh.

Less. Considerably less.

One of the things that has been done well, somewhat surprisingly is the management of the National Grid. Particularly in the summer, but ongoing. Because of so many offices and factories and shops and cinemas and... etc. being closed that resulted in a big overall drop in demand for power. The increase in home demand was far less. Anyway, as a consequence stuff like wind generated power, which obviously fluctuates and has to be balanced as it surges and falls made up a much greater proportion of the total energy use - a good thing. But the grid management of fluctuating wind (parp!) when it makes up a bigger chunk of the feed in is tricky. It all went seamlessly. Now it's winter, the wind is generally stronger and though people's home heating and lighting demands obviously increase, much heating is gas, not electricity, so I'd expect the summer's pattern of lower overall demand to carry on.

Getting wildly off topic but they think this will be one of the big benefits of mass electric car ownership.  They spend a lot of time, especially at night wired up fully charged with electricity.  You can then make money by allowing it to be used as a grid battery and a small % of the battery can be sold back to the grid, the net effect of millions of cars giving back a tiny % each allows massive flexibility in the grid.

You can already just buy a battery from the likes of Tesla for that exact purpose or to use the cheaper night rate energy during the day.

In other news, the wife's booked in for the vaccine next week. She's backline NHS and not at risk or elderly so it looks like they're getting their act together.

I'm supporting them by staying in and not breaking any rules.  Which I assume is more than many, many people who spent all summer happy clapping have been doing over the last few weeks.

If anything this clap is just reminding me when we 'did it' the first time, and that was a **** depressing time. Can we not please. I'd rather try and look forward. I'm sure they'll be OK without us freezing our balls off on our door steps...clapping

London hospitals are executing a mass discharge to free beds.

Many of the discharged will require specialist care at home, such as wound dressing and syringe drivers.

Proper creaking now.

Yet the "On standby, ready to go" Nightingale hospital still has no patients?
