Wow, even Tories now turning on Johnson and saying he is clearly trying to kill as many old people as possible:

A councillor in an English village where one of the first UK cases of coronavirus was confirmed has described the government’s strategy of tackling the disease as “a crime against our country”.

Samantha Flower, who is a member of the Conservative party and a social care manager for Sheffield City council, said: “I’m very concerned. They [the UK government] are saying they want as many people to get this disease to create a herd immunisation. But it won’t. My suspicion is that they don’t have the money for social care or NHS so that the weak and the old die.

“I’m saying that as a Conservative councillor and I don’t care if I get sacked. You judge a society by how they treat their vulnerable people. You judge leadership by how it treats its most vulnerable people.

How can you build herd immunity (infect everyone in short period of time) and at the same time have flattened peak?

Surley you can only have one or the other one but not both at the same time?

I think it's possible that this is the situation that kills the Tory Party for good, same for Trump in the USA

Don't underestimate the Tory's - they funded Tax cuts for the wealthy , in an economic crisis and funded by cutting disability benefit.

Then blamed it all on immigration !

WTF is going on in Italy?

More than 15000 infected but even more worrying the number of recoveries is only slightly higher than the number of dead.

More than 1000 dead in Italy and only about 1000 recoveries.

i'm terrified by the - 'going to affect 80% of people and 1% will die' stats... with some suggestion that it might actually be 3% that die...

I cant even deal... its just... f***.

CDC in America projects that as many as 1.7 million people will die here.

There isn’t enough data to be sure but the most likely explanation I’ve seen so far is the high average age of those infected.

the research has yet to be verified but one theory is here :

Quote

Despite worries that Southeast Asia may become a coronavirus hotspot after central China (where the Covid-19 outbreak started) because of their proximity and travel connections to the infection’s epicentre, more countries and regions like South Korea, Japan, Iran, northern Italy and the northwestern United States may have to bear the heaviest burden.

The US-Iranian researchers , led by Mohammad Sajadi of University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, said there was a “striking similarity” between conditions in locations inside the current outbreak corridor, with average temperatures in the five-to-11 degree Celsius range and relative humidity of between 47 and 79 per cent.

“These locations also exhibit a commonality in that the timing of the outbreak coincides with a nadir in the yearly temperature cycle, ” the study said. “[This is] perhaps pointing to increased risk of outbreaks with prolonged conditions in this [temperature] range.”

The team said that none of the cities affected by the coronavirus reported minimum temperatures below zero degrees Celsius, which may be a low for the contagion.

Just now, Kingman said:

An NHS consultant speaking on Sky News just now said that 70 to 75 year olds have a 15% chance of dying if they contract the virus.

Which is correct based on the current data...BUT.....the great majority of those in that age group who have died are reported to have had severe existing illness, particularly cardio and respiratory.

So it’s bad if you are old,  but it’s better if you aren’t ill.

It’s funny how many people think Boris Johnson is making these decisions without expert advice. They think he’s just watching the telly and making a decision. He’s not Donald Trump.

Temporarily reduce unemployment figures. It seems likely that a lot of businesses (both small and large) will go under as a result of this shitstorm. Great Depression II here we come. Buddy can you spare a bogroll?

Another thing that hasn't been much talked about: never mind the panic buying of bogrolls, what about food supplies generally? The supermarkets are probably right now getting a massive number of customers wanting to switch to doorstep delivery. Can they cope with the increased demand? And what about their supply chain when the food distribution warehouses and factories get hit by the virus? When does the looting start? Zombie apocalypse, anybody?

Just stopped off at morissons on the way home to grab some food & stuff for the weekend as it is usually pretty quiet on the way home on a friday. Absolutely insane in there, Busier than christmas eve, looks like it has been robbed with hardly anything left on many shelves, no rice, no pasta, no beans & definitely nothing that even resembles a toilet roll in sight. People in queues stretching down the aisles even for the self checkout tills, Trollies overflowing everywhere, couples with 2 crammed full trollies & their kids with another trolley. Ended up stuck in there for nearly an hour when it is usually a quick 10-15 minutes stop off. People are completely batshit crazy over what will be nothing more than a bit of a cold & a couple of days in bed for most people.
