I've not seen any toilet roll in the shops for over a week now and been to every supermarket locally (which is all of them) every day this week.

This morning my wife gave a lady in Sainsburys the kitchen roll she had just bought because this lady had broken down in tears at the tills because she couldn't get any toilet roll.

Even first thing in the morning?

Sorry but I don't recognize this description of 'young people'. The ones I know and meet are generally very sensible and level headed and are perfectly capable of behaving as unselfish, community minded adults. Unlike many actual adults I might add.

Several generations by definition cannot still all be young, but they were all socialised and educated the same way. They (and obviously this is generic) have never known a real genuine threat to life, experienced hardship at the societal level that involved personal sacrifice for a greater whole.

So when a situation like this crops up the pubs are rammed with them, despite the evidence, warnings and direction of a government that is trying to maintain our liberties while trusting the common sense of the ‘people’ to do the right thing.

Based on a desire to preserve our traditions of liberty I understand why they chose that approach, sadly it’s played out differently and we’re now going to learn the hard way.

I don't know how the penny hasn't dropped for some just how serious this is. We can all see what is happening here and we can all see what is happening in Spain, a week or so in front of us, and Italy a couple of weeks ahead. The Spanish PM said tonight "We have yet to receive the impact of the strongest, most damaging wave, which will test our material and moral capacities to the limit, as well as our spirit as a society"  I'm in no doubt he, and those leading Italy, would do things much differently if they had their time again and have taken stronger action sooner. We have been fortunate, if you can call it that, to have seen what is happening in Italy and Spain but our leaders and many of our fellow citizens haven't acted on that knowledge and we are going to pay as heavy a price if not worse.

Several generations of young people were raised not knowing what an existential threat really means. Living in a superficial bubble of consumerist, reality TV based bullshit is presented as the apex of western civilization, while the media spent three years telling them older people were their enemy.

Now we expect them to behave like unselfish, community minded adults?

I'll take a wild punt, and guess that the Venn diagram of "young people in their consumerist, reality TV" etc and the people packing out Westonbirt Arboretum (as per my anecdote) doesn't have a particularly large overlap.

Fair enough, but I’d wager there were far more under 40’s than over 40’s on the lash last night.

Just seen this “liked” by someone I know on FB. Utter madness. “We might have to shut down so get in for your cut and blow dry now or you might not get the chance”.

Sure. Just like every night.

That beach picture from the BBC article, a bit blurry, but what do you reckon? A seafront of ungrateful young 'uns? Doesn't look like it to me. People are gathering in places other than pubs.

There are some pretty basic things that we haven't done that we could have to have gotten out just how serious this all is. I know they do the daily press conference but they have been between around 4 and 5pm and only on the news channels live. What about cutting in half way through Coronation Street with a newsflash address to the nation. 5 months ago I couldn't drive down the M6 into work without between every junction seeing something regarding Brexit posted on the info gantries yet I have seen zero regarding the coronavirus the biggest threat to our country since WW2. I am sure there are numerous other pretty basic things we haven't done that we could have.

that game was played in Milan so not sure if it was so high in Milan compared the smaller towns. Valencia though have 5 or 6 players effected at the moment. Allowing Liverpool game with fans was crazy as Madrid is an absolute hot spot at the moment

Yeah but it was 40000 people from Bergamo travelling to and from the match presumably with a lot of those on public transport.

Way back in the thread I referred back to the incredibly heavy government information TV warning films back in the 1980s about AIDS. I was expecting something similar this time, and was surprised it hasn't happened.

Yep.

I read the whole post as any excuse to have a pop at younger generations tbh. Disappointing.

Found out this evening.two of her friends have had it.

A couple, late 20s. He bought it back from the gym where he's a trainer.

They're fine. No longer infectious, she's back at work.

Trouble is she's a district nurse and was treating patients before his symptoms became apparent.

Cat's well and truly out the bag.

Down to us all as individuals to try not to clog up the system now.

This 'generation blame' stuff is way wide of the mark. There are people out and about of all different ages. I've seen pubs packed with young workers, and I've seen groups of old duffers having a chat on Harborne High Street. I don't think we need to look to psychological justifications about how young people have never known anything like this; essentially very few people still alive have known anything like this.

The simpler reality is that most people are not the high-information news-watchers populating this thread. Most people pick up only a hazy sense of what's going on, and government messaging has been extremely confused. First there was the disaster of 'herd immunity' - there literally could be people out there who think they're helping by going out! - and then the government took a long time to start talking about this really seriously. They have only really emphasised 'social distancing' over the last 3-4 days. Don't believe me? Check the tapes:

I'm not suggesting that everyone at the seaside or the arboretum or the local this afternoon watched this interview; what I am suggesting is that if you were more aware of government communications at that point than you are now, for whatever reason, you may reasonably enough have come to the conclusion that this was all kind of no big deal really.

I was having a pop at everyone bone stupid enough not to be taking this seriously. Where I live that is overwhelmingly younger people. What I’ve seen on tv is overwhelmingly younger people.

I’m 42 not 72, that's not ‘old’, I’m angry at people my age and older who’ve been so dismissive of this too, but the people congregating indoors where the chances of catching this are exponentially higher, are mainly younger people.

If you’ve got 10 minutes just listen to this clip of an NHS doctor on a radio phone in. It’s frankly terrifying what we’re facing and the public has utterly failed to take personal responsibility for their actions. It’s insane.

And I don't think it's fair to generalise younger people here. Generally you're better than using confirmation bias to prove your point.

Two example already presented to you following your original post. They won't be exceptions. There will be similar events still happening that older people are still going to. Just like younger people still went to bars and pubs. Pubs in villages? Older people more than likely. Still full. I'm with you here. I'm 28 and I'm furious at anyone not taking this seriously, old or young.
