Matt Targett

There's a lot of pressure on Targett and Cash to contribute offensively now I think. The fullbacks seem to be key to our shape with the ball and they both get multiple chances each game.

I think both fullbacks for Rangers got 20 goal contributions each (all comps) last season and while ours won't be expected to reach those numbers they'll still be expected to chip in fairly often.

I'm sure they're both capable of doing so though.

I thought he was once again the good old Targett of last season yesterday. Seems to have his confidence back, solid defensively and he was a very willing runner in attack.

Just watched the laat 3 games he has played kn back to back ( as you do ) and he is properly back into form. And its easy to see why.  This formation suits him as he has one of the number 10s around him at all times as soon as he passes the halfway line . His passing is crisp and his tackles are committed again. Never thought he would be a bombing on type of fullback but he is exceptionally good on the ball in a non flashy way.

The perfect full back in this team would be some kind of fusion of cash and targett.

cash is unbelievably athletic and is great running with the bell but lacks end product/final ball and at times is caught out defensively.

By contrast, targett is an excellent passer and tends to have great final product as well as being basically completely solid defensively (when in form) but has far less energy and drive so doesn’t get into the positions as often and doesn’t influence the game as much

reflecting on it (as I’ve been writing), targett is the more intelligent of the two but cash is the better athlete

Impressive. Always thought JG benefitted a lot having Targett behind him.

Ashley Westwood is 8th for midfielders. He still gets pelters on here for his sideways passing.

Either we're all a shit judge of a player. Or the stats are wrong.

Yeah, but he plays for Burnley

A progressive pass in a Burnley shirt is one where you don't have to put in a career ending tackle as the follow up

Going route 1 and sending long balls up to the attackers is technically a progressive pass and that's pretty much how Burnley plays. It also helps that Westwood is probably their main ball passer in the squad and dead ball specialist.

Tbh, Targett being so high up his list probably has to do with us being a bit of a long ball team under Smith this season as well. If the guy did a list for CBs, Mings would most likely be up there for the same reason.

Is there any chance he won't put on another two stone over the Xmas? Ease up on the gravy Matty, you've enough lockdown timber you need to shed already. Maybe someone can get him a Jane Fonda workout VHS for the new year.

Comments like this really annoy me.

He is a professional footballer. He happens to be playing under a manager who fundamentally requires 110% effort and a hard press in order to implement his style. Do you think he would be picked if he was overweight by Gerrard? No of course he wouldn't.

He is a thicker set player, just like McGinn is. It doesn't make them unfit or overweight.

We are in the top 3 in the PL for Progressive Passes Defensive Actions (PPDA) behind Liverpool and Brighton. This metric measures a teams ability to press effectively and requires super fit players. Targett doesn't get in a team like that unless he's got a proper engine on him.

You'd think the bloke was prime Andy Fordham the way you describe him.

Targett misses too many doubles for that comparison to work
