Looks a shadow of the player of the season last year.

He probably needs to be 'second fiddle' for want of a better description, doesn't look comfortable being the 'main man'.

Well below par this season unfortunately. Same with Jack. Maybe can regain some organisational confidence alongside someone who knows the role, like Collins if he is to sign a short term deal

TBF.  Last year his partner was Terry.  This year it’s not.  Collins is not John Terry either.  Collins has just as many rash moments as either of the current two.

I said season before that Baker made him look good as well since he looked dodgy with Elphick and Samba. Can be only one common issue here

Terry carried him

Aston Villa are ready to open talks with Wales international James Chester after agreeing a new £45,000-a-week deal with Jack Grealish. Villa will now step up negotiations with Chester over an improved contract as beleaguered manager Steve Bruce moves to keep the core of his squad together. Grealish has signed a five-year deal which will more than double his previous salary, as revealed by Telegraph Sport on Sunday. The 23 year-old was a serious summer target for Tottenham Hotspur but Villa's new owners, Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, held firm by insisting he was not for sale.

Christian Purslow, the club's chief executive, said: “Securing the long-term future of Jack, a player we believe will play a pivotal role in leading Aston Villa back to where it belongs, is fantastic news for everybody associated with our football club.", "He is a tremendous talent who has been with us since he was a child and naturally we are delighted that he has now committed the next five years of his career to Aston Villa.”

Chester, 29, is now next in line for fresh terms after interest from Championship rivals Stoke City in the summer. The former Hull City centre-half has just over 18 months left on his current deal.

Barely has a defence around him and a shaky GK.

He looks spooked.

Agreed. He hasn't been good this season but he was POTY last year, you don't turn to shit over night.

I said earlier in the thread that he's probably at his best playing second fiddle to a more vocal, commanding partner. Doesn't look comfortable being the main man in a unit of sh#t.

Carried by Terry, lol. Chester was better than Terry last season in terms of pure defensive play. Terry was good, but got caught out plenty of times as his legs were not what they used to be.

Chester hasn't got the leadership/organisation skills Terry had however, and definitely hasn't got the distribution from the back.

Of course the defence is also about the unit, not just individuals, and from last season we've gone from a proper CB to a midfielder out of position and from a solid if unspectacular keeper to a nervous kid who doesn't look up to it. Add in a right back at left back and the constant chopping and changing of players infront of them and its no surprise it looks a mess.
