Joe Kinnear tried to sign midfielder that was already a NEWCASTLE player 2 Nov 2013 22:30

Newcastle had loaned out Shane Ferguson to Birmingham but the Toon director of football tried to sign him after scouting trip

Joe Kinnear thought he had spotted a special talent on a scouting trip to Birmingham – only to be told he was already a NEWCASTLE player, writes Alan Oliver in the Sunday People.

Toon director of football Kinnear raved to City chiefs about midfielder Shane Ferguson during the club’s Capital One Cup tie against Swansea in September. But when he asked about signing him, Brum bosses thought he was winding them up – because Ferguson is on loan at St Andrews from Newcastle until the end of the season.

Newcastle chiefs and manager Alan Pardew, who saw his side beat Chelsea 2-0 yesterday, were said not to be aware of Kinnear’s blunder.

A City source told Sunday People Sport: “Ferguson had a particularly good game that night and Joe Kinnear told one of our officials he was interested in signing him.

“At first our guy thought he was joking but then he realised Kinnear did not know Ferguson was already a Newcastle player.”

The 22-year-old, who can play in midfield or at full-back, signed a five-year contract with Newcastle in 2011 but spent three months on loan at Birmingham last season.

Blues boss and former Toon star Lee Clark agreed a deal in July to take the Northern Ireland international back on loan until the end of this season.

His last Premier League appearance for Newcastle was last December in the 7-3 defeat at Arsenal.

Why do we usually have bad results against Newcastle ?! We have a bad record against them .. And we've taken less points from them than Man City from when they came back to the league !?

Although we finished above them two times (Last season was with surprisingly with GD , Thanks to Liverpool and Sunderland !) ..

Amongst the circus they have some very good players don't they, Krul was amazing today, Remy scored his 7th goal of the season and strong midfield with Ben Arfa, Cabaye, Sissoko and Tiote back on form. Yep a few of those would get in our team no question.

Issue last season was so many of those were injured for a while, they reminded me of us in Houllier's year.

They have a great squad and showed it by finishing 5th 2 years back but struggled to cope with Europe League football last season.

They also often had a better treatment room first XI than a fit one.

Read the other day that newcastle sold out their 2500 allocation at spurs the other week and it sold out a week before the game, fantastic support considering the distance and that it was a 12.30 kick off, plus game was on tv, still can't stand the deluded clearings in the woods
