But I think it would be worth trying to play him through the middle in the 4-3-3 formation. FC Groningen boss Erwin van de Looi was the unfortunate manager who had to somehow plan for the season ahead without his prized asset. When Paul Lambert came calling for the 22-year-old Dutchman, van de Looi had no choice but to grant the Groningen youth product the move he had always dreamed of. the player had earned his chance, admitted the former defender, but to this day there is a void yet to be filled in his team following Bacuna’s departure. “We definitely miss him in our team,” van de Looi admitted. “He gave our team extra power, he could score a goal and he had a very good attitude. “It’s very frustrating for us. “But I see it as a compliment for our club to sell a player from our academy to a club like Aston Villa.” Groningen are a stable, mid-table Eredivisie side. They usually fall just short of European qualification. They rarely produce world beaters from their youth system either – Arjen Robben and Ronald Koeman are two particular exceptions. Selling to big Premier League clubs is uncommon, too. In recent years they’ve lost Luis Suarez and Tim Matavz to Dutch rivals, but Bacuna’s move to straight to England is rare. When Villa lodged a £1.5 million bid for the former Dutch Uunder-21 international’s services, Groningen were in no position to turn it down, especially as the man himself was keen on the move. Leandro Bacuna And it’s no surprise to van de Looi that the winger seems to be settling in so seamlessly at Villa Park, albeit in a slightly more defensive role than he is used to. It’s at right full-back that Lambert has been keen to play the youngster in recent weeks while in Holland he was usually more advanced. But having watched Bacuna emerge during his time as assistant manager before making the recent step-up to No.1 at Groningen, van de Looi knows his former star man is adaptable and is backing him to handle the new role. “Leo is a talented player with a very good mentality,” he said. “I think at this moment he’s surprising everybody in England. On one side I suppose it is a bit of a surprise to me that he has started so well. “He’s just started in the Premier League and seems to have adjusted very well. “Then, on the other side, I’m not surprised at all because he’s never afraid to show what he is made of and he also seemed to play his best matches in Holland against the big teams.” Bacuna has already proved his former coach right, inspiring Villa to a shock 3-2 win over title-chasing Manchester City a fortnight ago. A man-of-the-match display saw him play a part in two of his side’s goals, firstly setting up Karim El Ahmadi then curling in a superb free-kick to spark an incredible fightback after Villa twice went behind, “He scored a few free-kicks in the Dutch League also,” added van de Looi. Expect more of those to come. “Leo loves the game and is always willing to train and improve himself. “He’s an open minded, pleasant boy with a positive attitude and he’s willing to help other players.” During his time in the north of the Netherlands Bacuna made over 100 appearances after coming through the youth system. He had been at Groningen since he was a young boy. Already his new team-mates have taken to him and noticed his hard work in training. Fellow Dutchman and captain Ron Vlaar, himself a dedicated trainer and often one of the last to leave Bodymoor Heath, recently revealed how much time Bacuna spends on his set pieces and his technique. He is the type of young and hungry player that Lambert is particularly keen on. Of course, it’s still early days for Bacuna in the Premier League and he admits himself that he still has plenty to learn. Writing him off before he really had a chance. I think he broke into their fire team do young that people forgot how young he was and expected huge things from him.
