Referees' body PGMOL has accepted that Liverpool midfielder Fabinho should have been sent off for a tackle on Brighton striker Evan Ferguson during Sunday's FA Cup tie.

The Brazil international received a yellow card after catching Ferguson with a nasty-looking challenge.

The decision was not overruled by VAR, even though it was the type of challenge PGMOL would expect to result in a red card.

Brighton won the match 2-1.

As part of a drive for transparency within PGMOL, the organisation has privately let it be known there was enough evidence to warrant a red card.

It is being stressed that while the challenge was of relatively low intensity, there was a full point of contact from the studs above the ankle from behind.

That should have triggered an intervention from the officials reviewing the game at Stockley Park, with the expectation that referee David Coote would have been sent to the TV monitor and advised to upgrade his decision.

Ferguson had to be helped from the field after the tackle and later left the Amex Stadium on crutches.

I thought it was a borderline yellow / red, because of the low intensity, but interesting they've come out and said this.

Although not sure how "privately let it be known" = "transparency" 😬

Incredible how it's tailed off for them compared to 12 months back.

Conceded 9 goals away to Brentford, Brighton and Wolves since start of the year.

Midfield problems are well documented but Nunez has morphed back to the comedy figure he was start of the season, Gapko dosen't look ready and Salah is looking back to being disinterested.

All that's left for them is to rouse themselves in CL yet again but with the state of their midfield that's a very big ask this year.

People can sometimes exaggerate how big summer windows are for clubs but it certainly will be for Liverpool in a few months. Just the odd signing for Liverpool isn't going to be enough given the core of the team is 30 or above now.

Gakpo and Nunez are massive downgrades on Mane and Firmino. Gakpo looks a one hit wonder and Southampton/Leeds who were linked in summer was probably his level

Arthur is Liverpools version of us signing Jenas 😂

Had completely forgot about him. Didn't he get injured in some reserve game for them two days after signing.

Juve need him back to sell him for some more "creative accounting."

Mr Happy has this week reached new levels of paranoia and whinging.

First he wouldnt answer a Liverpool journos question as he wrote some negative articles about Liverpools form and then he doesnt include it as a 3-0 loss because Wolves didnt have any 2nd half attacks except the goal 😂

Maybe he needs more subs

What he needs is subs during a winter break in a Saudi Arabian exhibition match.

Or a snickers.

The levels of entitlement that have built in these fanbases is ridiculous.

Dyche could become something of a heroic figure in a week or so - imagine a derby defeat and a grinning Dyche on the touchline.

Led by the managers.

We must change the rules so we can try and win every trophy, every season.

That sort of feat shouldn't be allowed to be targeted like a points tally.

It should be near impossible, and a miracle if achieved.

Anyone else think Klopp has always seemed a little nuts? The cracks are now showing...

He was always a bitter crying clearing in the woods but the constant losing is showing him up
