NowDoINotLikeThat
5 year contract is pretty generous ..but without paying him silly wages i imagine a longterm contract was needed to persuade him. Very good signing . If he looks after himself no reason why he couldnt be playing at 40. Hopefully Dunne will sort himself out this season and might see some organisation at the back between the two. On sidenote - sprised Arsenal didn't show an interest.

MrDuck
On sidenote - sprised Arsenal didn't show an interest. Wenger, for all his undoubted qualities, couldn't sign a decent keeper if his life depended on it. Although there was rumours City wouldn't sell to a rival? DiegoD
Wasn't keen on us getting him, but he is a good keeper so hopefully he does well here. 5 years is just plain silly though.

A good keeper but thats a long contract for a 35 year old with a dicky shoulder.
makouns-knitwear
Christ, Arsenal fans are really pissed about this arent they, oh well im sure you'll be able to get the ouija board back out and summon Lehman from the grave again boys.
AVFC-Prideofbrum
5 years is a lot but it'll end when he's 40 ...fair age as we've seen. Maybe they are worried giving him 3 year contract, will do a Friedel, if give him a 3 year contract and he's still playing really well at 37, he might leave when we could still get 1/2 more seasons out of him. I'd have liked 4 year contract, so one year extra I don't think is that bad really.

GaztonVilla
Just a note on Shay's Shoulder.. It was about 15 months ago that he injured it. In the last 12 months, he has not been sitting around wrapped in cotton wool in case his shoulder popped out again. Do you think he hasn't been diving around in training? Yes, training is different than a match scenario.. He's played competitive football in that time too. His shoulder, you're right, could pop out now. So could Gabby's. In the 15 months since he had treatment on the original injury, it hasn't popped out. His chances are looking good. ps. He's **** chuffed to be at Villa. brummybloke
Christ reading some of the dribble on here, damned if you do damned if you don't. really? so if we offered him a 2 year deal with a rolling 12 month extension giving us some protection if he fails to deliver or gets crook. you think people would be unhappy with us signing him then? see your scenario of all or nothing is the only dribble i can see. there is such a thing as middle ground. with this signing contract wise we havent found it. worst case scenario given under performs/ doesnt settle/ gets injured then we have someone with very low resale value who will cost us £2.6 million each season for the remainder of his contract. best case scenario we have a very good keeper for 5 years i would be interested to see how many keepers who play at a high level in their late 30's have the same build as given, most have the build of friedle or van de sar, lean and tall, not stocky. keeping the weight off may become more of a problem the older he gets, friedle and van de sar kept themselves lean all year round. given appears more the bosnich build, continually having to put in the extra work to keep the weight off. and the heavier the player the more stress his body takes especially a keeper. lets hope this gamble pays off, it would be rather depressing having a star player on top wages for 5 years stopping us signing anyone else. good luck shay and start losing that fat

Some people on here really are f**king brain dead. The reason he has a 5 year contract is because it is what he demanded. He already has 3 years of big money at City, if he is to take a paycut like we would have demanded he then says he will agree to the cut if the contract is longer. Its called negotiation to a point where both parties are happy. Offering a 2 year deal is a complete waste of time.

Couple things... firstly, the contract you put out, he simply might have said he didn't want that short a length of contract. Secondly, Given is lighter than Friedel and suddenly wouldn't class Friedel as lean and tall. Friedel is only an inch bigger than Given, it's hardly a big difference.
