Blonde (Andrew Dominik) - I like this a lot, not an accurate portrait of Marilyn Monroe's life, almost more like someone else's dream/nightmare of what it was like and to that end the film itself follows more of a dream logic rather than being a straight story, I came across this review from Mark Kermode and I think he gives a fairly accurate description of it.

Watched The Dry, a decent slow burn Aussie drama with Eric Bana returning to his home town 20yrs after the death a local girl he was suspected of killing.

very good but not a cheery film!

Watching Forever Young at the moment.

It’s so plop and cheesy but I love it. I remember watching it a lot with my Nan when I was a kid. Reminds me of those times. It’s a cheesy but nice film.

Guilty pleasure. 7/10.

Also, I can’t believe how young Elijah Wood looks in it as well.

I'm interested in it but more because of JFK and her death, how much do they look at that?

Its one of those conspiracy theories I can happily buy in to whilst doing zero research on it

I don't think anyone should go into it expecting it to be about her life as such, as it's an highly fictionalized account, to the point where I wondered why they didn't just make it a film about an entirely fictional film star from that era.

JFK makes an appearance at the end, but they don't really go into any conspiracy theories as such what they do show come across more as being part of the films fictional narrative rather than being an actual conspiracy.

It's not really a conventional film, it's more of a 'art house biopic' that uses dream logic to tell the story, in that sense it reminded me of Mirror, and it's drawn obvious comparisons to Fire Walk WIth Me and Mulholland Dr. also Repulsion, basically I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed with it because of expecting it to be conventional and accurate biopic of her life, whereas as Kermode said in that review I posted, it's more of a horror film than it is an actual biopic, to the point where you can almost ignore the Marilyn Monroe aspect of it.

Marilyn Monroe is depicted as almost like a ghost haunting Norma Jean.

Very much this.

It is not just movie stars who get devoured by the persona the media construct for them.

It is definitely a tragedy as defined by the Greeks.

Feels like this should have been released at Halloween.

The US basically treats October as Halloween month, the same way everywhere years December as Christmas month, so releasing it now let's them capture the 'OMG IT'S HALLOWEEN!' moment and gets the maximum number of views for the release month.

I've just sat down and taken stock of my horror collection, I did post it on here before but that was probably about 2 years ago now and its grown quite a bit since then, I've spoilered it as its a pretty long list.

Anyone got any recommendations or is there any obvious choices missing?

As you’ve put Sightseers on there, I’d suggest Kill List.

Likewise, as you’ve listed The Lighthouse, I’d suggest The Witch.

Also, as I don’t see it listed, it’s probably worth you watching Under the Skin - unsettling would be an understatement.

Oh and while I don’t think it’s quite on the same level as the above, The Ritual is quite watchable.

Triangle is definitely worth a watch. Especially if you enjoy time loop films.

Edit - And Peeping Tom. It was a contemporary of Pyscho (released just before Hitchcock’s film) . Basically ended Michael Powell’s career but is now considered a classic.

I've been meaning to get The Witch and Kill List for a while, love both of them films, especially The Witch, I've seen Under the Skin once and wasn't blown away by it, I wouldn't actually mind watching that again so I might add that onto the list.

Is The Ritual available on Bluray? I've not seen that when browsing amazon, twas a decent film though that was, same with Triangle but I've seen that countless times because its always on The Horror Channel.

Never seen Peeping Tom, I might have to stick that on the list as well

I didn't notice any Ty West on there, but I liked Innkeepers, House of the Devil a lot back when I watched them. If I've watched The Sacrament (also a horrorish film by him) I don't remember it.

X is on the list, I think the only others I've seen by him are Cabin Fever 2 and House of the Devil

Think the ritual can be found on dvd, not sure about blu ray.

The Witchfinder General with Vincent Price is another older one that’s worth a watch.

Never seen it, but I always thought the babadook looks interesting.

What a list! 👏

Apologies, if I’ve missed them from your list, but off the top of my head  - Wolf Creek, A Quiet Place, A Lonely Place To Die, Freaks, Don’t Look Now, The Fog, An American Werewolf in London, Vacancy, Eden Lake, Misery, Joy Ride/Roadkill. Jeepers Creepers.

Some good shouts there, I actually had American Werewolf in my hand just the other day in CEX but the queue was massive so I threw it down in a strop and stormed out.

I'm a tight-fisted bastard so I try to only get films when I see them for £10 or below, unless I see something I really want

As you have Devil's Backbone in there I would give The Orphanage a try, though it's more of a unsettling ghost story in the vein of The Others rather than a full on horror.
