. Due to McGinn’s stupidity it’s going to fall on everyone else’s shoulders to step up. Carpe Diem.

Enough of the fish puns for cod’s sake

Difficult first half for him. Lots of poor passes, ran himself into trouble with the ball and missed completely the offside trap for the goal.

Much better in the second half-

Hopefully Pau can get a decent break now and get in proper shape and full fitness… hopefully no more niggles and can play consistently, at least in the league.

Even better if Ezri could do the same.

We need to keep the two of them together at CB really. Although we’ve previously done well with Carlos and Konsa RB.

We’re better off without having to play Lenglet, despite him doing quite well.

His English is unbelievably good. Seems like a good character: v level headed and pragmatic.

Superb, speaks so well and spot on about the decision and bemusement at taking so long on the VAR review.

“the best is forthcoming…” 👀

Yes I know Lenglet has filled In and done a job but defence has been pretty crap during this period. First choice Konsa and Pau. Second choice Carlos and Pau who kept two clean sheets against the two best teams in the country.

Agreed, best results/performances have actually been with Pau, Carlos and Konsa all together. Diego can’t seem to stay fit though…

But, going forwards, a Pau and Konsa partnership should be our future and makes us a better side… they suit each other really well and make us better in play.

Was he just rested tonight?

I'd imagine so. Nothing on yesterday's presser.

Have a feeling he's still nursing an injury but not enough to keep him out of important matches.

I wouid have thought so. Think Emery prioritising winnable games

Every game is winnable, should have started.

Yep. he had a two week break before the Wolves game. He's absolutely key to the way we play, so if anything, resting him when we're 2-0 up against Brentford would have made more sense.

Some games are far more winnable than others. No point in risking it all for 1 point v city when we only have to win 4 games v Brentford, Bournemouth, Chelsea and pick up a win somewhere else. Emery’s the very accomplished and successful professional here and he made the call on his 20 years+ experience at the highest levels.

He’s made it abundantly clear through this selection that our aim now is to secure champions league qualification (I suspect he doesn’t really care if it’s 5th if we get the extra place) and to win the conference league.

There's no guarantee that 5th will be enough though. We'd probably have lost anyway last night, but the team selection, especially without Pau, practically guaranteed it. The side that finished the game was an absolute shambles.
