david-avfc Posted August 27, 2022 Share Posted August 27, 2022 A bit of a strange one to be honest, on paper Bednarek is only 26 and has played 130 Premier League starts so if he's available on the cheap then it fixes a whole in our squad. However, there's still of a sense of being underwhelmed as although Bednarek would probably do a job I don't see him pushing the quality of our squad higher. He's always struck me as one of those forgettable bottom half Premier League defenders. I guess we often get drawn in by the names of foreign players at exotic clubs abroad who often turn out to be nowhere as good as hoped, so a guy who has a reasonable record in the PL already might not be too bad, particularly is Diego does return by the end of the season 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Mings will have 1 year left on Contract. Chambers will have 2. We'll have an option on Bednarek and can decide on Konsa. Their situation doesn't tell us anything about us because their situation is completey different to ours. Funny thing is I remember a lot of people at the start of window saying that defence wasn't a priority, because we had Konsa, Mings, and Chambers, and Hause an adequate back-up, well we've got those options now, other than possibly Bednarek instead of Hause which is an upgrade anyway, even if Bednarek isn't an upgrade on Chambers, Mings, and, Konsa, he's still represents more of an upgrade on our defence than many were asking or expecting for at the start of window. I think two important things to remember is that fans might be fickle and have written Konsa completely off, but the experts at the club will have more sense than that, and even if he's out of form now will recognize that if they can get him back on form then he will be a big assett to us, possibly our best defender even, he's still young, so will still be seen as big long term assett for the club as he's already proven how good he can be, and also Carlos is only injured he we will return at some point, maybe sooner than we're expecting, we can't just stockpile central defenders worth twenty million plus or whatever. 5 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

This is my concern with it really. I agree with people saying that Bednarek obviously isn't completely useless, but even if we weren't getting a CB of the quality of Carlos to come in as a replacement I figured they'd at least try to get someone in that mirrored his skillset in some way in terms of being comfortable on the ball when pressed etc. As far as I'm aware this isn't what Bednarek offers at all as he's just more your out and out "solid" defender, so it just seems a bit counterintuitive. 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
