Rodrigo Bentancur

Concerned this is not much of an improvement on what Douglas Luiz offers us now. Bentancur might have been off-the-charts a few years back, but so was Luiz during Project Restart when we were all concerned that Man City would recall him.  Having said that - there are many examples of players not finding or losing their tune at one club and flourishing elsewhere. Lucas Paqueta formerly of AC Milan and currently at Lyon comes to mind.

He is fine, the problem is Juventus midfield is very meh at the moment. Bentancur, Locatelli, Rabiot and McKennie have been rotating mostly this season but none are brilliant and its a huge weakness position for them. They are good players but not top quality and they cannot find a balance at the moment

He might be OK in a change of scenery but he is not the mythical DM people are calling out for but he is 6 foot 2 so at least some people will be happy

If we can get to a position with our squad where our weakest area of our team contains names as good as Locatelli, Rabiot, McKennie and Bentancur, I'll be very pleased.

For a reminder of people screaming this is a bad signing, our midfield 6 years ago in the prem was probably one of the stronger midfields we've had in the last decade on paper but we were awful:

Gana, Veretout, Westwood, Sanchez, Gardner

The Juve midfield 6 years ago in serie A:

Khedira, Marchisio, Pogba, Lemina, Pereyra

Their fans might have a different idea of what a good midfielder is for their team, judging by this forum though we have the same high standards and I'm not sure we're far enough on as a club yet to demand that.

So basically we sign Bentancur   Juve sign Vlahovic .. Arsenal don't get Vlahovic  . Juve then need Athur  rather than loaning him to Arsenal. Ouch

I love it when a plan comes together - even if it was by accident.

Think that’s called a virtuous circle (or debagging Arsenal).

Sadly the Bentancur transfer wont have a say in that. Juventus need to sell somebody for big money to affford Vlahovic

Which will be Arthur, De Ligt or Dybala

And they are trying to add Kulusevski into the deal for Vlahovic with Fiorentina.

If he can join on a free in the summer i can see Fiorentina folding and selling for whatever they can get for him . It will not be the £60 mill thats for sure

Off topic but I don't think Vlahovic will go there anyway.

Think it depends where Haaland goes and he will be the back up option for others

Those stats are an improvement, but in Serie A which is less intense. I dare say he’s capable of stepping up though and he’s still young enough to have more development room to grow.

I think as we get to this stage in our development, we are looking for incremental improvements. It’s unlikely we can find perfection in the transfer window, so players that are better than what we have even if that’s only slightly, is progress.

Those statistics are good, Serie A is a top league and he's playing for a top team.

Bentancur has 45 caps for a very good national team in Uruguay, the nation are renowned for good, strong players.

He will also learn from a former top player such as Gerrard and progress as a result.

Gerrard wants two players for every position also.

And playing for one of the best teams in that league helps. These comparison stat grids just never tell the full story. Good for seeing what type of player they are, useless for finding conclusive proof that a player would instantly transform us as some would like to believe.

YT highlight videos tell us more about the agenda of the creator of the video than the subject of the video. They are not necessarily an accurate representation of anything. We acknowledge this for Tonev-style, creaming of pants over so-called ‘ballers’ (complete with dodgy af soundtrack) videos, but we can’t see through the agenda of a video showing a player accompanied by clown music.

His stats, in the aggregate, look good. It can be no accident that he has appeared a huge number of times for one so young for a powerhouse of Italian football.

Some critical perspective would be helpful.

100% agree. Let’s sign him up and win the league!

In all seriousness, the critical perspective is what tempers expectations, which in turn stops fans from turning on players for not immediately being the most amazingly perfect player ever to wear the shirt.

This guy seems like he could be good, but there are no guarantees he would be for Villa.
