January Transfer Window - 2022

Or to introduce a statement that repeats what I just said in a different, simpler and more exact way, I don't think there is any chance whatsoever that we will be interested in signing Trippier.

We obviously need some players - but do we need them in January? SG has done wonders for most of them. Unless there is anyone already lined up, surely we should be keeping our powder dry until summer - and then let the money flow

If Alvarez is available in Jan we should grab him before the WC. We won’t get him afterwards!

Maybe, maybe not! If the right player is available then get him in.

In the summer if Newcastle survive we might be competing for the same players whereas at the moment players will be very reluctant to go there with relegation a big chance.

There is loads of positivity around the club at the moment and Gerrard is new and fresh faced with a big reputation and that might tempt some players.  If we tail off poorly before summer that might dampen it a bit.  You should never miss out when you are on the rise.

January is always a bad time to do business but the summer is very competitive.  I think it doesn’t matter about the timing, if the right player is available then get them in.  Plus it means they’ll a full preseason if signed in January unlike most summer signings.

Are we actually after him?  That time might have passed now and that’s if the info in the summer was true, it seem to die quickly like a lot of rumours and Gerrard might have his own thoughts.

Plus the WC isn’t until the end of the year so the summer would still be before the WC.

Dunno if we’re after him or not, but he’d comfortably be our best player for one of the 10 positions. Good call on the winter WC (forgot!) but still reckon bigger teams will pick him up next summer if he doesn’t move in Jan.

This comment just reminded me that we signed him in my dream last night. So take of that as you will.

Nice if Barcelona are allowed to use some of their £1bn in debt to sign some new players.

I hope for Barcs's sake that the lads negotiating now are better than Bartomeu

https://www.fearthewall.com/2021/2/12/22279903/borussia-dortmund-bartomeu-barcelona-zorc-bayern-munich-club-world-cup-tigres-bvb

Taken from a NYT article originally

Barcelona had decided on its strategy, and its price: Dembélé, in Barcelona’s eyes, was worth $96 million, and not a cent more. No matter how hard Dortmund pressed for a higher fee, the men from Barcelona would hold firm...

The Germans told their guests that they had a plane to catch. They had no time to exchange small talk, and they were not here to negotiate. If Barcelona wanted Dembélé, it would have to pay roughly double the Spaniards’ valuation: $193 million.

Barcelona’s president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, was stunned. But he did not walk away. He quickly agreed to pay almost the entire amount, settling at a fee of $127 million up front, with a further $50 million in easily-achieved performance bonuses.

It is no wonder that the club is fooked.

One from left field.

Coutinho is currently rotting on Barcas bench and on occasion in their reserves. Given Gerrard's admiration for the Brazilian would he be worth a loan spell?

Positives:

  • Incredible talent
  • Playmaking spark
  • left wing cover if we offload anyone in January

Negatives:

  • Will not press (ala JG)
  • Very pricey if he does sit on the bench for us
  • Would he even want to come to play under SG

Coutinho earns £380k/w at Barca with 18 months left on that deal. Even if Barca gives him away for almost nothing and pay a large % of his salary like they did with Suarez he'd still be out of our price range.

Difficult to tell how close we were to getting Alvarez over the line in the summer but it looks like that ship may be sailing. The funny thing is I think Barca might need him more than we do at the moment.

Could be very possible he wasn't interested in coming to Villa...  He's the hottest prospect in South America right now.
