Worst performance of the season from the midfield and management.

Would have been cruel if that Martinez error cost us after his performance. Thought Cash and Mings were unbelievable and Targett and Konsa were very good.

Appauled at McGinn's performance. Absolutely abysmal.

Smith you lucky man that was a goal.

Ridiculous you sidnt make any subs. Whats matter with you?

Targett brilliant

Emi motm

No it wasn't, it was actually further offside than pretty much all of Ollies disallowed goals.

Totally agree with the rest of your post

Southampton is scary team man. Creative and smart in runs and passes it seems they get in the box without any trouble. First half we were trying to catch up to them they were better in every way.

Saw them with arsenal did their job looked a good team in good form. This game i just watched in shock how good they played they looked like top 4 team easy.

They played so well so intence created chances and lost with two dodgy var decisions against them. I think they can easily crumble after this defeat . Defeat like this hits you hard mentality to the drain.

Absolutely got away with one there, we defended well but very fortunate with two VAR decisions that went our way. We’ve had marginal offsides so I can be happy with that but I’d have been furious about the handball if I was a Southampton fan.

love Deano and completely support him but it was painful to watch that game drift away from us with a lack of subs. We needed to do the Nakamba swap with Barkley much earlier, we looked ropey in that area from about 75mins and it nearly cost us. We were about as lucky tonight as Burnley were the other day, so I guess our week has evened out.

If Dean brings off McGinn then the goal saving block he makes at 80 minutes goes in.

We won so obviously he was right about the subs.

but, but, but subs.

I agree. It was sensible game management. We had the game under control throughout most of the second half.

A determined performance from the whole team tonight. Tough on Southampton, but it was equally tough on us on Wednesday night and three points from those two games was well deserved.

VAR even sided with us twice, although it still owes us and the sight of the lines being drawn at the end to judge whether a Villa backside, had played a Southampton shirt sleeve onside, shows VAR & the current interpretation of the offside rule is a complete ass!

Absolute robbery there. We're lucky Saints are toothless and the offside rule is nonsense.

Martinez - a couple of game winning saves, but not to his usual standards. Looked off colour.

Cash - involved more defensively than he's been used to so far but did well with a few vital interventions and touches.

Konsa - solid as ever.

Mings - usual performance, less pissing about, and just, just got away without his customary **** up.

Targett - he's been fantastic this season and this was no different. Defensively rock solid, beaten once, and links up going forward so well.

Luiz - not the best performance from him, kinda summing up the central midfield. Struggled to put a stamp on the game and was left to hassle and try to nick the ball all match.

McGinn - he's off colour. Looked off the pace, taking that split second too long on the ball, misplacing simple passes, and not getting his usual hustling style going. Made a few good interventions but the game largely passed him by.

Traore - barely in the game with us so often on the backfoot. He's useful as an out and he's got the ability to bring something of nothing but this game wasn't for him.

Barkley - basically played as a second striker, but even Watkins was more useful defensively and the game passed him by. And then he scored. And it was a great header. And then the second half mostly passed him by. He's got quality dripping off him but without the ball today he's been useless. But got the goal.

Grealish - much more of a defined winger performance. He's brilliant. He's just brilliant. Fantastic cross. The out of every attack. Brilliant.

Watkins - worked hard in a pretty thankless night. I do think he's struggling a little too go past his man at times with the ball, he's much better running onto a ball. But worked hard and he's a great presence up front.

Nakamba - managed to go across the touchline.

Smith - that wasn't a good performance and the lack of subs is **** stupid with the fixture congestion now. Especially as it was obvious a few were not at the races today.

We've been saved by the offside law being absurd.

Spot on!

Or maybe it was perfectly played because of the fixture congestion.

Up the Villa

A smash and grab, perhaps.

Martinez MOTM, two World Class saves.

Thought Cash was good too as were the whole defence.

Barkley was much better tonight.

Watkins was immense and unlucky not to score.

But first-half Saints dominated the midfield, just like last time we played them. McGinn pretty poor again. Some sloppy passes, a bit slow and continually caught in possession. For me he's our weak link!
