I thought we were better than this.

Wait til you see what the following generations will have to say about us.

I do hope sites like these will still be accessible for historical reference.

Even VT itself has come a long way if you consider the stuff that used to get posted on here in the early days.

The saga of the BBC refusing to accept it put out a badly researched transphobic hit piece that, amongst other things, had a headline that suggested transwomen were forcing lesbian women to sleep with them, was largely based on a survey that was self selecting as came from an anti-trans lesbian organisation, claimed no pro-trans voices wanted to be interviewed when it appears they actually did interview one, and extensively quoted a lesbian porn actress who has numerous allegations of sexual assault against her, continues.

The BBC has basically refused to accept the complaints against the article, despite, so far, changing the headline, pulling the contribution by the 'problematic' porn star with the sexual assault allegations, accepting the survey that sparked the entire piece was deeply flawed and that the entire piece was journalistically below standard, and as such you can still read it. Eventually they might realise that is a shameful piece of trash writing attacking a vulnerable minority, and do the right thing and pull it, explaining it's crap and wrong.

But apparently they'll need to be forced to that point.

https://news.sky.com/story/fina-votes-to-effectively-ban-transgender-swimmers-in-elite-womens-competition-and-create-open-category-12636874

Quote

Swimming's world governing body has voted to effectively ban transgender athletes from competing in women's elite races.

FINA will explore establishing an "open" category for them in some events as part of its new policy.

The new policy was passed with a roughly 71% majority after it was put to the members of 152 national federations with voting rights who had gathered for the congress at the Puskas Arena.

Seems like a common sense position to me that they need an open category for those that have been through male puberty.

I don't think it's right to discriminate against anybody but the governing bodies in alot of sports need to make a decision on this, as fina has done.

‘Friends’ co-creator apologises for misgendering Kathleen Turner’s character

"Pronouns were not yet something that I understood"

Friends co-creator Marta Kauffman has apologised for misgendering Kathleen Turner’s character in the series.

Speaking on the BBC radio show The Conversation, Kauffman, who created the hit sitcom with David Crane, admitted that it was a “mistake” to refer to Chandler Bing’s transgender parent as a man.

“Pronouns were not yet something that I understood. So we didn’t refer to that character as ‘she’. That was a mistake,” said Kauffman.

Throughout the series, Chandler (Matthew Perry) frequently referred to Turner’s character, Charles Bing, as his father. The character was also known as Helena Handbasket, which was the name they used for their drag show act. The series never specified if Charles was trans, but Kauffman confirmed that she was.

Kauffman added that she set out to create a safe environment on the set of the sitcom and did not tolerate transphobia offscreen.

“I like very much to create an environment where we have a happy set and a happy crew,” she said. “It’s very important to me that where we are is a safe place, a tolerant place, where there’s no yelling. I fired a guy on the spot for making a joke about a trans cameraperson. That just can’t happen.”

Speaking about the show’s LGBTQ+ representation, Turner previously admitted that the series hadn’t aged well.

“How they approached me with it was, ‘Would you like to be the first woman playing a man playing a woman?’ I said yes, because there weren’t many drag/trans people on television at the time,” Turner told Gay Times. “It became a phenomenon, but no one ever took it seriously as a social comment.”

During her interview on The Conversation, Kauffman also addressed the criticism Friends has received for its lack of racial representation, having recently pledged $4million (£3.2million) to African American studies as an apology.

“Over the course of the last few years I’ve gotten to the point where I can say unfortunately yes, I am guilty of that,” she said. “And I’ll never make that mistake again. I was clearly part of systemic racism in our business. I was unaware of that, which makes me feel stupid.

“I’ve learned a lot in the last 20 years. Admitting and accepting guilt is not easy. It’s painful looking at yourself in the mirror. I’m embarrassed that I didn’t know better 25 years ago.”

Before reading that yesterday I never knew 'Chandler's dad' was meant to be a trans character.

So its not just me then neither! I assumed  he was just a drag queen. Not saying that what she saying isnt correct but how many years ago was this show filmed? The time back then to now is different to what was deemed acceptable and what wasnt

No, you don't have to. She's chosen to.

I don't think it's a ridiculous clarification considering no one seems to have realised the character was trans.

Who made them apologise?

I think everyone recognises it's a product of its time, that hasn't aged well, and recognising that is to be admired.

Chandler's dad was in the "all male revue" viva las gaygas. It implies therefore that Chandler's dad was drag and not trans. But the writers, and society at the time mixed the two.

These days with modern thinking it's right to say we got it wrong back then. No harm has been done and it's now been acknowledged.

Was my thoughts exactly. We just have to apologise for everything because something else we do and say now will obviously be not PC in a decade and we need to apologise for it.

We currently have to apologise for being straight white males. We have special privileges we need to apologise for. I assume white gay people will need to apologise in a decade and so on. Cis gender women will be the ones in 20 years etc..

Kauffman suddenly realised there was no black people in it the other day so now she's trying retrospectively diversify the cast by deciding Chandler's Dad was trans.

I would imagine at the time that no thought whatsoever went deeper than Chandler's Dad does drag.

So am just wondering did anyone ever complain or probe the producer into making apology? If not, not sure why she is apologising.
