Just said on MOTD that the target for this year is to improve on last and get into that top half.

Those who want him sacked if we don't get europe are going to be gutted.

Doesn't sound unreasonable that.

But even improving on 11th will prove to be very difficult

Otherwise known as progress which Dean has delivered every year he has been here.

Sorry if already mentioned… but I liked the way Deano was asked on MOTD whether the set piece routine was his or his set piece coach’s, and he gave the credit to the set piece coach.

He’s a man who doesn’t often let his ego get in the way.

That actually gave me some insight into just how important, quality specialist coaches can be to be honest.

Ings goal was directly/indirectly? As a result of a set piece routine.

Agreed, I think just about all Villa fans like Dean and would love to see him succeed at Villa

Loads of teams we can finish above...Palace haven't scored a goal yet, Burnley and Newcastle obviously, promoted three, Southampton don't look great at all so there's 7 there. We shouldn't be finishing lower than last season at all.

I agree top half is a good season in the circumstances. 12 months off a proper european challenge imo.

Yes, because it’s the fans who speak in favour of the manager who have an agenda…..

Most fans speak in favour of Smith. On here yesterday everyone was speaking in favour of Smith. But fans can also discuss his weaknesses. And like every single person on this planet, he too has weaknesses. For some reason some fans appear to deny this and continually post sarcastic comments trying to dismiss the views of these fans.

Obviously, we have no idea what Deano's targets are (that Purslow gave him), but my own expectation is a top half finish.

I think, with the summer we have had (Mike Lubb drama and the new signings), to be roughly where we were last season, but maybe with a slight improvement (ie: 10th or above), would actually be pretty good overall.

If i had to say specifically:

Top 6 - Dreamland, unrealistic, amazing if achieved, defo dont expect it ofc...

7th to 8th - over achievement.

9th to 10th - expected achievement.

11th to 12th - Underachievement, but not the end of the world.

13th to 17th - underachievement.

18th to 20th - urm.....ye.....nuff said.

I think all these targets will move as the season progresses.

I've always said, my realistic good season target, would be top 8, and good cup runs.

If we get top 10, play some good football and show long term signs of progress, I'd be ok.

However their are many variables to that, to the positive and negative.

As it could be considered a season of " transition " some things might get a pass.

If we are honest with ourselves though, the owners and CEO didn't come here, to settle on mid table.

And what does the continual pointing out of ‘alleged’ weaknesses achieve?

Just because you believe Smith should be doing something, doesn’t mean it hasn’t been considered by him and the coaching staff. It may just be another tactic will get a better outcome from the team.

No two coaches are the same, they will have different methodologies on how they want to play, there’s no rule book.

Im all for concise criticism, but it needs to be constructive.

Isn't this a Villa forum and a thread titled 'Dean Smith'? I would expect that this is exactly the right place for fans to discuss Smith and to discuss both the positives and the negatives. Why the continual avoidance of not just discussing but even recognising his weaknesses?

100% agree, but as per above, is this not the place to discuss it?

Please point out anything I have said that is not constructive, from the last few days the only unconstructive comments I see on this thread are from people complaining and posting childish oneupmanship comments to people that may post something that suggests an area in which Smith could improve

On the subject of specialist coaches do we have a coach for shooting? Sometimes you look at Mcginn or AEG for example and think of put them in a shooting position around the box in a match situation,  how many times would they hit the target? And how many times do we have less attempts than the opposition.   If last seasons have at home to Liverpool proved,  buy a ticket cuz you might win the lottery.

I am going to watch MOTD this morning - quite crazy that someone who has had a career in the game cannot see the obvious influence of a set piece coach on Villa's game so far. Dean Smith has got to be one of the most flexible managers out there, no ego on him, sees a weakness in his side and brings someone in to address it - he should be applauded.

I’m loving the new long throw. It’s just such an obvious weapon as well. As soon as you win that first header (Mings), it’s pandemonium in the box.

I absolutely hate defending against it so it’s great to see us using it against other teams. It’s not pretty, but if it gets us 5 goals this season, job done.
