I’m loving the new long throw. It’s just such an obvious weapon as well. As soon as you win that first header (Mings), it’s pandemonium in the box.

I absolutely hate defending against it so it’s great to see us using it against other teams. It’s not pretty, but if it gets us 5 goals this season, job done.

Agreed, I have always hated the likes of Stoke for doing it so well! Surely it’s a fairly teachable skill and now it seems we’ve cottoned on. The less good news is that it may become a weapon that other teams use more. At least we’re ahead of the curve to some extent, for a change.

I am going to watch MOTD this morning - quite crazy that someone who has had a career in the game cannot see the obvious influence of a set piece coach on Villa's game so far. Dean Smith has got to be one of the most flexible managers out there, no ego on him, sees a weakness in his side and brings someone in to address it - he should be applauded.

I do like that Smith is not afraid to bring people in to 'help' him with something that may not be his forte. Great managers and leaders have the confidence to surround themselves with very strong people

I think this is one of Smith’s great strengths actually. Someone posted here a while back a lecture he did on building culture (or something like that). It was clear from that he’s they type of leader who has the security in himself to know his own weaknesses and surround himself with other professionals without being threatened by them

Shakespeare had more to do with Leicester winning the title than tinkerman. Plus the brilliant scouts and even Pearson setting the team up that went on crazy run that survived relegation

And Dean was doing it at Brentford too. He got Frank Lampard in to talk to his players about what it is like playing at an elite level. Smith had no problem highlighting the fact that he never played at that level

This =s from an article published today on MacPhee

'Villa are also close to appointing another first-team coach, who will effectively be the No. 3 behind Shakespeare.

It is understood the appointment has been made, and though the new man’s identity remains a secret at this stage he is working his notice at his current club.'

Makes sense.

Hopefully puts to bed the panic about ROK leaving.

Both him and Terry had logical reasons but people wanted to make out that it was all part of a disastrous summer.

Nice of Pep to take a step up in his career from head coach at Man City to number 3 at Villa. Shows he has ambition.

Those who want him sacked if we don't get europe are going to be gutted.

Do these illusive fans exist? I have yet to find someone that says Smith should be sacked if we do not get Europe.

Me too. Our bloody awful set pieces have been an annoyance for too long. Great to see us causing problems from them at the moment.

I am guessing that as we are practicing long throws from a potential scoring perspective that it will also help us with defending against them. This is a win win for the Brentford game

On the subject of specialist coaches do we have a coach for shooting? Sometimes you look at Mcginn or AEG for example and think of put them in a shooting position around the box in a match situation,  how many times would they hit the target? And how many times do we have less attempts than the opposition.   If last seasons have at home to Liverpool proved,  buy a ticket cuz you might win the lottery.

Yeah Keinan Davis has been lined up as the new shooting coach

It's almost like we have a manager who has improved us and progressed the club every single season. Someone who spots weaknesses and does things to address it.

Almost. Still hasn’t addressed that weak central midfield area though 😉

It's almost like nobody has said we have improved each season under Smith. Good of you to highlight this for us all

I know, right?

None of us are disputing our improvement under Smith and NSWE, some are just a little concerned about this season and not having Grealish.

If you highlight any concerns though, you’re just entitled, ungrateful and negative.

I agree, Smith has been brilliant for us. But there are some problems that we need to address. ElGhazi is simply not good enough to be in the 1st XI. CDM needs addressing and it is not good that we have a 36 year old starting at LB. Hopefully one more quality addition for the middle and if we have a good run on the injury front we can push for the top half finish
