"It is believed chairman Randy Lerner and manager Paul Lambert would even be prepared to resist offers of up to £30 million – more than four times what the club paid for him eight months ago"

60 million tv rights in summer, 30 million will prove not to be allot for Bentekke quality. Invest the 60 and hold on to him. Clubs will be paying more for less quality IMO

Thank you. He didn't play very well in either game against FYR Macedonia but the reason I labelled it harsh was that certain players are allowed 30 caps without ever really performing and are given an easier ride (Hazard). In my view, he remains the best man to play up front ahead of Lukaku or Vossen or even Mboyo but Wilmots will have to work out how to make him chime better with Hazard and De Bruyne. After all, he's only as good as the service he gets from those behind him but his international career is still very much in its infancy.

I'd be very very surprised if we even got an offer of about £25m for us to be able to turn down. Smart clubs don't splash out on a striker after one good season. Look at Papiss Cisse - I know he was only at Newcastle since January but still.

The only time I can remember it happening was Andy Carroll, and we all know how that tuned out for Liverpool.

I think teams will want to see how he does in his second season before committing a massive amount of money for his signature yet.

I would take £30m. He could fail to live up to his potential and turn out to be a one season wonder.

Carroll never had that much potential - he's a single attribute player - where as Bentekke seems to have a lot more tools in his armoury....

I don't think I'd take 30m for him. I'm sick of us selling our best players. If the wage bill is low enough to be self sustainable, and the new TV money means we can go out and buy a few players, let's just stop selling our best players and build around them instead.

But more importantly, if Benteke actually wants to stay here for a season, then we should really encourage that! It would send quite a message to potential signings.

We'd certainly be stupid not to consider £30m for a player we paid about £7m for only a few months ago. I agree.

But I also think it would do more damage than good by selling him. We have what looks to be a special talent, and the disappointment of him moving on will make the whole good vibe around the club of late totally detiriorate.

I decided to revisit the subject of Benteke for BeNeFoot. I hope you enjoy the article:

Excellent article.. Just a quick question, why is he getting criticism for national team performance? Has he been poor recently?

I was in Belgium recently and talking about Benteke to some local guys at a bar. None of them rated him at all and said he is the only weak link in the Belgium team! They couldn't really say why, just that he's not very good.... I asked them who they would prefer to play as a striker and they said anyone! Not seen any of his national appearances but his club form must be a hell of a lot better

Its prob because Hazzard is being his usual greedy self and not setting up the chances

There is no way Lerner would refuse £30m

If Lambert can convince Lerner that he can get more after another season, Lerner might wait it out.

On what basis? I think that's a ridiculous statement

On the basis we owe him a fortune, our net debt is in excess of £120m and the club loses money year in year out.

We need a major overhaul in the summer. I cant see Lerner giving Lambert money to spend unless it comes from player sales.

Not a major overhaul, but we definitely need to address specific areas of the team.

Unfortunately, you're probably right about any monies being available.

What makes you think that? He gave Lambert £15-20m last summer. If we survive he'll see that we're making progress and with the new TV money and a fair few high earners out the door I think he'll be given quite some good money. This time I think he'll go the other way around than what he did with MON. MON got money from the start and bought some good and some bad players but on high wages. I hope and think Lerner has learned his lesson now.
