Sunderland

Sunderland have superb home support with the numbers they pull in and also away support for the distance they travel most games. They mostly sell out away games but majority of the time they only take the smaller allocation, but it's still great support for how shit they are and the miles they travel. We have a bigger fan base but for the last ten years or so they have easily beat our attendances for some strange reason. They just seem more loyal in the north east and are more fanatical about their football up there than fans from the Midlands. It's a completely different make up compared to the West Midlands area. Both deprived areas but they are two completely different regions.

Only football club within how many miles?. With us, you have multiple big clubs in a small area. That's why they keep attendances high. Same with Newcastle.

Within 50 miles of VP there are 15 clubs in the football league, four in the Premiership and four in the championship.

Within 50 of the SOL there are 4 clubs, two in the premiership, one in the championship and one league 2.

Always makes me laugh when they go on about what a big club they are because their attendance. Obviously has nothing to do with the lack of choice though.

Very true but what is the population of Sunderland, in any case aswell Newcastle is only 10 minutes away from the Metro, the population of those two combined must still be less than whole West Midlands area.

Edit; Just checked and according to 2011 census (o.k wiki) Sunderland has population of 275, 300 so that's some going to be pulling in around 1/7 of the population on a regular basis considering they're largely shite.

Let's remember not everyone in Sunderland either will care about football or be in a position to actually go to games.

It's what I've always said, Birmingham and the West Midlands area just isn't obsessed as other regions are about football, maybe due to the more multi-cultural make up perhaps....

And why are there more clubs in the Midlands?

Could it be that there are a lot more people in the Midlands?

Isn't this like comparing the population of Aston to Villa's attendances though? When after Newcastle and Boro the next club of note is almost 80 miles away (Leeds), the two in between at 60ish being Carisle and York, they have an absolutely huge area to realistically be pulling people in from.

I don't know if they still do but years back they used to give free tickets to the local schools and community , that way they could ensure a decent crowd ...

Made a good decision in appointing Fat Sam and backing him in January and now looks like it will pay off. He's squeezed a lot more out of a squad of players arguably no better than ours.

There are. Many of which though, happen to be of ethnic origin and our support amongst such groups is not high. They tend to support the likes of Liverpool and Man United. A problem they have far less in the North East.

Not that I think Fat Sam would have kept us up but he'd have done a vastly better job than the hopeless Remi Garde and would have been the perfect manager to get us up from the Championship.

Another absolutely shit house decision from our outrageously incompetent board.

Yeah we sacked Sherwood about two weeks after Big Sam went to Sunderland which sums things up. If we'd sacked Sherwood after the Leicester debacle or even after the awful performance at home to West Brom a week later we'd have been in pole position to get him as Advocaat hadn't walked at that time.

To be fair, I reckon had we appointed Pearson at that point, we'd still be in the mix of trying to stay up.

This is exactly what I was saying at the time. We were a fortnight too late sacking Sherwood, he deserved less time than he got. Allardyce was always going to go to the first club with a vacancy in the bottom half, and the problem with letting him go elsewhere was not just weakening ourselves but strengthening our direct rivals as well.

I really do think he'd have kept us up, though it may have been by the skin of our teeth. Possibly our lack of a decent striker would have sunk us anyway, but even if that were true he'd be exactly the right person to get us promoted next season.

Stupid, stupid decision from the board.
