Thank you Mr Sinclair for helping to prove my point that Man City is a septic tank of a club and anything associated with it… Player, owner, manager, fan or sponsor… past or present… is a fundamentally loathesome individual/coagulation of organisms…

Benjamin Mendy: footballer remanded in custody on rape charges

'The Manchester City footballer Benjamin Mendy has been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with four counts of rape and a sexual assault.

The French international defender is accused of offences against a 17-year-old girl and two other complainants, a court heard on Friday.

One of the alleged rapes is said to have taken place at Mendy’s home in Cheshire this week, Chester magistrates court was told.

The three other counts of rape date to October 2020, and the sexual assault is alleged to have taken place in January this year.

Mendy, who had been expected to feature in Manchester City’s squad to face Arsenal on Saturday until he was charged, will spend at least the bank holiday weekend in custody after a judge refused his application for bail.

He is next due in court on 10 September, and he could be in custody at least until then unless his legal team appeals against the bail refusal. Any appeal would not be heard before early next week.

Mendy, wearing a red hoodie and black Adidas jogging trousers, stood expressionless with his arms folded as the charges were put to him by the court clerk via a French interpreter.

Debbie Byrne, prosecuting, said Mendy was released under investigation on 11 November last year after being arrested on suspicion of rape. In January, he was further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault, the court was told.

Byrne said one of Mendy’s bail conditions was that he should not have house parties. She said police were called to a party attended by up to 21 people at Mendy’s home in the Cheshire village of Mottram St Andrew this week. He was then arrested over a further allegation of rape and for allegedly breaching his bail conditions, the court heard.

The prosecutor said Mendy had shown an an unwillingness to comply with his bail conditions, and he should be remanded in custody to prevent him from carrying out further offences.

She said: “The defendant has shown total disregard and, the crown will say, an arrogance in ignoring the bail conditions and continuing to conduct his social life as he chooses.”

Mendy sat beside two court officers in the glass-fronted dock as his barrister, Christopher Stables, asked the judge not to remand the footballer in custody. Stables said Mendy had already been in custody for “two days and two nights” while awaiting Friday’s hearing, and it had been a “real shock” for him.

He said the experience “has served as a tough lesson of just what can happen if bail conditions are not adhered to”, and that if granted bail on Friday the footballer would know it was “in effect his last chance”.

Stables said Mendy was willing to transfer £50,000 immediately to the court as security if he was granted bail, as well as surrendering to “what might best be described as house arrest” with a lengthy curfew and electronic tag.

The lawyer said Mendy was willing to live at a “much smaller” property owned by an unnamed friend, a “positive influence”, on the other side of Manchester.

However, the district judge, Jack McGarva, said he was not satisfied that Mendy would not commit further offences if allowed to leave court on bail. Mendy showed no reaction as he was led to the court cells.

Stables told the court that Mendy’s trial “will be many, many months away, well into the new year,” raising the prospect that he could be in custody for several months unless a more senior judge overturns the decision on Friday.'

This is Not Great IMO.

Found not guilty of the first case / charge after video evidence of the complainant fully consenting and seemingly enjoying sex with Mendy and his co-accused one week after she claims they raped and abused her.

Doesn’t mean they’re innocent of that or the upcoming charges of course but if this all gets dismissed from court that’s some serious reputational damage to repair.

Has Guardiola ever actually managed to bring a 'youth' player into a team he's managed?

Management is quite easy when you just go and cherry pick everyone's best player each summer.

Foden. Back at Barcelona, damn near the whole team it seemed.

Right now City feels like when you hit that point in FM or PES Master League where you've made your team so ridiculously strong that you sweep all honours and you just end your save because it's boring now.

See, thats where I start funnelling ridiculous amounts of money to a non-league side for their unwanted players and see how they develop over the years…

Eventually when the job comes up, I take it and make it way back up the leagues with a bucketful of cash and a shitload of success 😂

Outside of Foden, I can only think of Cole Palmer. They keep sending the likes of Liam Delap and Harwood-Bellis on loan if we factor in strictly homegrown talent - but I don't think either made senior appearances compared to Palmer.

The City model is aggressively horde young talent and sell them with buyback clauses. They have a very good youth system, I just don't see how they will get the games when you have the unlimited budget Pep has.

A share the concern but the minute Pep leaves it’ll start to show signs of cracks I think. They still do well for sure but won’t be so dominant. As boring as they are to watch these days he’s an astonishingly good manager.

I know this is the Phillips thread but i am glad someone else has said they find watching Man City boring! I hate watching city or any other side pass everybody to sleep it just doesn’t entertain me. The sky commentators will tell you it’s the greatest thing your eyes will ever see (I guess they don’t use pornhub) but for me it’s boring to watch even when they are 2-0 down because you know they will probably win 3-2

For me some of the earlier Pep sides were incredible to watch. The one with Silva, Sterling, Sane, KDB and Aguero.

These days Pep seemed to have cracked the code of winning football matches (even pre Haaland) it’s crap to watch but it’s effective.

I hope one day the game moves overnight and there's a paradigm shift and they get absolutely battered, exposing that if one thing happens their whole playstyle breaks. Like about 10 years ago in champs league when Bayern ignored Messi/Xavi/Iniesta and instead man marked Busquets out of the game and won about 6-0. The source of all their play was broken and I'd argue they've never been the same since.

KDB is the only player that makes Man City slightly enjoyable to watch. He's the Pep Bot XL with a little bit of freedom.

Txiki has built and incredible team, I wonder how they would play with a bit of freedom.

They currently have more 'youth players' in their first team squad (Foden, Palmer, Lewis) than we do (Ramsey, Archer), and they're operating at a level where they can't really afford to take risks on just playing youth players as they have to challenge on all fronts.

?

They have such an enormous advantage over basically every team they play in the league that I'm sure they could play younger players a bit more often than they do. We're the ones who have to scrap for every point and almost never play a much worse side than our best XI.

Yet more dodginess from them but it seems they can keep cheating away.

Excellent investigative journalism though, far too many in the media just happy to nod along with the nonsense.

The benefit of having shitloads of money. It's essentially impossible to be held accountable.

But why would they?  They're expected to be elite and win everything.  Why would they deliberately play youth players who aren't good enough?

The whole youth thing is just a ridiculous argument.

to be fair what's more ridiculous in football -

man city's billionaire owners want to throw money at the club but cant because of FFP so invent a made up company to sponsor them

man utd's billionaire owners dont want to throw money at the club so because of FFP they have an official bed and pillow partner

pick your poison

I read this the other day. Very good article and well worth your time. It's not overly long.  Yes it's "just another dodgy sponsorship deal" but, man, it's so bloody brazen. It really lays out just how unaccountable you can be. It's rotten.
