In my experience, girls particularly like being called "pretty". The slightly archaic compliment resonates a bit more with them rather than something more contemporary such as "you're well fit" (which I also find has a place in modern courtship). I don't want to claim this is a universal, but I've generally found that women dislike the word 'pretty' as it sounds like the sort of compliment parents give to their young daughters after they've spent an afternoon playing with the dressing-up box.
