I'd love for the club to announce a new contract before kick off at the Sevilla game and I hope they do. But...if it's not to be, if he leaves for the shortcut in what is a pretty short career, I'll be disappointed - he's a brilliant footballer, a good Captain and a Villa fan through and through. He'll be a Villa fan for the rest of his life - if he goes, I hope he wins a sackful of medals and if he comes back to Villa Park in another shirt, I'll applaud him onto the field - because he's earned that - he's given me footballing moments I won't forget - the volleys against Derby and Cardiff, his goals against small heath, his part in our run to promotion, his heroic part in keeping us up last season, all those little moments in games where he's done something outrageously skilful - those moments make the life of football supporters better, they've made my life better in some small way. And we've had them, loads of them, we've loved them and we've been fed them by one of our own - I hope there will be plenty more to come. If he goes, I'll be gutted, but I won't wish him ill; he'll be back before too long; as a player in his twilight, as a coach, as an ambassador or just as a plain old fan - Villa is in him and always will be, regardless of what colour shirt he wears. I'd like him to stay, I want him to stay and I remain very hopeful that he will - but if he comes back in another shirt, I'll applaud him, because he's earned it and because I'm not a child, I'll applaud him for what he's given and because he's a Villa man. We were about to roll up and as one of the most saleable assets, was told he would have to be sold. When BSWE came in he was more than happy to stay. United made unwanted overtures to Jack but despite their interest, never seriously followed up on it and again, Jack bought into NSWEs plans for him, which remains the situation to my knowledge. That I will swear by as solid. He won't get the adulation he'd get if he stayed here his whole career and led us to untold glory, but I see that as him missing out on a massive positive instead of a negative. I'd obviously like him to stay but I can't bring myself to hate him because he wants to play at a higher level than we can offer him. Football is only a game. Also, let's be honest - if he broke his ankle and came back half the player he was, none of you would be suggesting Villa kept him around on £200k a week until he retired if we had better players available for less money. Seems weird that players aren't allowed to dream of better things but the club should drop them in an instant the moment something better comes along.
