If you take the 1-0 result and use only that fact to determine whether the manager got it right or not, you're being naive. Yes, Croatia didn't threaten, yes we won, but our goal was scored thanks in a large part to a really poor piece of goal keeping. Play that game another 10 times, and we probably would win it 7 times out of 10 (Foden hitting the post, Kane having an off day, Sterling being largely rubbish apart from the goal could all improve on their performance). But we absolutely could have played a better team and i would not be at all surprised if the same lineup drew it 0-0 three times out of 10. Now bring in the nuance of the fact that it's a tournament played with lots of games in a short period of time, and his VERY questionable selections become a bit more valid, if we assume he is going to rotate and use the whole squad over the course of the group games to avoid burnout before the knockout stages. So, we will see if the manager got it right over the next few games. And whether, come the knockout stages, he picks the same team and we bow out to a much better team than Croatia. You may then be able to say he got it very wrong, as the win mislead Southgate into thinking that was his strongest team. It's far from determined at this point, but you go ahead and blindly accept the media peddling the fact that Southgate got it right. Naive indeed. But he need to back it up with goals and assists otherwise it's just pretty on the eye stuff.
