Does this mean I can start listening to Lostprophets again?

Seriously though, I don’t think I ever could. I can’t separate the art from the artist so if I even was an MJ fan, I couldn’t listen to him. He was just lucky he never got caught and found guilty.

It's funny isn't it.  Gary Glitter has been almost erased from history.  You will never hear his songs again (and one was a Christmas staple)

How come he's treated differently to MJ?  I guess MJ bought himself an innocent verdict as seems possible in the good U.S of A

You could list loads of musicians - especially the rock bands/artists of the 60s/70s. They were no doubt all up to stuff with underage groupies.

Pete Townshend accessed a child porn site, Bill Wyman fell in love with a 13yo girl and allegedly began a sexual relationship with her at 14.

Like you say, its weird that some are scrubbed from history, while others aren't and are still revered.

I think with MJ his most devoted fans are forgiving,  blaming his upbringing, that he never had a childhood so wanted young kids around him. Just seemed more innocent, although it certainly wasn't

If you watched his documentary, how the parents got away with it I do not know,. As said they were as guilty as he was, most allowing and knowing what was going on.

Is Jackson’s music still played on radio?

I guess Jackson’s back catalogue is just much more loved (although if you said I HAVE to listen to something from either, the chorus to “Hello, Hello, I’m Back again” is bloody good as is “Rock n Roll part 2”).

I often wonder what would happen if it transpired beyond reasonable doubt someone like Charles Dickens had done similar* - are we still watching The Muppets Christmas Carol every year? I think we likely would in that case, the story is arguably bigger than the author.

I think it’s easier to separate some artists from their work than it is others.

*Yes, Dickens scholars, I know about Ellen Ternan, but I believe she was of age and it possibly was platonic anyway.

He hasn't been erased but I do think he's dropped out of the spotlight, he's not as big as he could be but that could just as easily be whoever now owns his estate and music sitting on it rather than flogging the dead donkey, I'm guessing his radio play is pretty non existent and I'm sure various outlets have enquired but they've not sold rights to say a film or a big documentary that would keep him in the public eye, even a huge re run on his albums like the beatles and stones have done in the last decade (the paper gatefold CDs) or a vinyl push, he's certainly not vilified in the same way

As a side step to all that... Aaliyah's record label finally released all of her stuff this year 20 years after her death, I'm sure it's her uncle who's in charge her estate and he's moaning like **** about it and doesn't want it to happen but all her stuff is on spotify for the first time and they're releasing everything on vinyl starting this month, maybe she's the same, no longer in the limelight because he family are arguing with the record label over ownership of her music and of course money which results in her music not getting the exposure it deserves

I would guess that if you wanted to use a Jackson song for say a commercial it would cost you an absolute fortune and that's the main reason why people don't and not because of what he is

I have heard it on the radio in the car from time to time and I thought it was odd given what we now know. I barely ever listen to the radio so I can't really give any clue as to how often his music is played, I just know that it is.

Didn't Jackson buy the entire Beatles catalogue? If the estate still owns it then I'm sure they make plenty of money from that. I'm sure @bicksterwill know as he's the oracle on everything Paul, John, Ringo and George ;)

Sony own them now

think Jackson only owned 50% of it anyway and they bought it off the family after he died

I'll admit it, Glitter's 'Another Rock and Roll Christmas' is still on my Xmas playlist on Spotify. Cracking tune. Much better than the McCartney dirge.

Yeah that’s a more appropriate and readily available example. Although I only know bits and pieces of his interests, I was under the impression it was still debated as to just how far his interest in children went.

Regardless, if indeed he was a predator, the Alice books would still be sold in their tonnes. They transcend the author.

Plus, now giving it some more thought, I feel there’s probably a difference in reading the work of a dubious individual than actually hearing their voice in their music. I guess it’s easier to separate the work from the author. If Mike Leander had been a sex offender instead of Paul Gadd, we’d probably hear Glitter on the radio more.

Cheers, but the book he was researching for never happened.

I was just having a bit of fun as people on twitter seem to write “where’s the book” whenever his name is mentioned.

I think the difference with Jackson and Glitter is the latter was actually convicted which lets people remain in a state of denial with regards to Jackson as despite the overwhelming evidence, he’s not a convicted offender.

With Glitter though it’s funny that Rock n Roll part 2 does sometimes slip the net and was recently featured in Joker.  The song is pretty ingrained in a lot of American sports events too.  Tune though to be fair.

Never liked him, never liked his music, totally baffled by all the adoration.

Same here, even before the kiddyfiddlin. One of many who I will change radio station when they get played.

Others include Iron Maiden, UB40, Simply Fred, Ed Gingertwat, and any warbling female droning through a vocoder.
