So how do we get rid of this guy?

He is on a massive contract and it's a waste of wages that should be spent on up and coming players we can develop.

Think we are proper stuck with him honestly, it's a problem.

Just incredible how much damage Gerrard has done to the club.

Nice solid bit of hyperbolism to start a Wednesday.

I like it.

We don’t we give him a chance under a proper manager.

It's mental how a player is being written off based on how he performed under the previous manager.  Other players were given a clean slate under Emery, but not Phil apparently.

Or maybe we could try him under a proper coach, no?

Feted in January, derided in December. It's the Villa way.

Even if he is relatively unsuccessful for us in terms of winning games and points the benefit to the younger players of getting to train with a truly elite footballer will benefit us in the long term.

The profile increase alone is worth it.

Coutinho is slow, low intensity, doesn't press well and is mentally frail.

He won't fit into Unai's counterpressing and he won't feature much.

If we can manage to get rid in January even if it's just loan It'll help our January business a lot.

My nan is mentally frail, she's 97.

We're talking about an elite level sportsman who's been able to compete in the highest pressure environments that world sport can offer.

Pull the other one.

Just stop spouting hyperbolic rubbish and lets see how he does under an actual football manager.

He didn't have decent managers at Barca or Bayern?

Your observations are noted and have merit.

but, not all players are naturally atuned to pressing.

When Phil first arrived, we was waxing lyrical of how blessed we was to get him......Phil has been exposed to this arduous league, and seems to be struggling, with lost form.

It all depends if UE see's him for what he is, and works the system to accomodate him......you can possibly do that with one player, but no more than one.

Phil can unlock defences, on form, he can do things many players can't, thats what balance brings.....but in a team that fails to protect him, he becomes an easy target, and subsequently a passenger.

Only UE will know what to do with him, I trust his judgment.

Unfortunately for PC some people's hatred of Steven Gerrard is so all consuming that they can't stop tarring him as "Stevie's mate" . He should be given  chance under UE as with all the others. I've not seen any evidence of PC socialising with SG - he always seems to be with the other South American lads  . PC might be relieved to be free of the "manager's mate" tag. Let's wait and see before writing him off.

This is spot on for me, a clean slate for everyone else except for Phil because he's "Gerrard's mate".

You only have to look at the social media accounts for Martinez, Buendia or Luiz to see all the South American players seem to be a close group with along with all their families. And I have heard nothing to suggest that Phil wants out.

So, unless we hear from the player himself that he wants to leave, or from UE that he doesn't want him, then he should get our full backing.

I think everyone wants him to do well, I can’t imagine there are any serious fans who want him to play badly. Unfortunately Coutinho was a big signing, big wages and a long contract and has been in poor form since we signed him. We know he has incredible technical ability but the question is whether he can convert that into being effective consistently in premier league matches. I am not convinced, but hopefully a better manager will get far more out of him. It would be fantastic for us if he can turn it around but at the moment it looks like a vanity signing which has backfired. £20m and £100k+ p/w for four years, it’s a shame we are having these questions just 6 months after signing him.

It might turn out that Emery can't get him back to his best, which is fine, but he needs to be given the chance at least.  But there are people on here looking him turfed out immediately before he's even kicked a ball under Emery.

I agree totally.

No one mentions the good work put in with Kamara's family.....The continous dark references to SG's tenure, is desperate IMO.

by all accounts, We have an all singing, all dancing elite manager now, lets just be grateful for that.

Phil will work with UE as all professionals do....lets just see what materialises.

We'll see but I think he is likely to be a highly paid substitute for the most part.

But with five subs a game if he can give maximum energy for 20 minutes it could make a the difference in key games, it's not an insignificant role.

He has quality and and I trust Unai to get the best out of it.

I think it's more a slight on SG than Phil....but hey ho.
