Is he not the southampton version of Grealish? Boyhood fan, one club man, captain, stand out player?

I'd be amazed if we get this over the line

Portsmouth fan apparently.

I agree, I think mobility and intelligence are the most important attributes in a DCM in todays game. I'm not convinced a physically imposing DCM is what we need particularly.

I think the issue is we only really have Nakamba who is a DCM and he isn't quick enough and doesn't read the game well enough. We need someone like Ndidi from Leicester, I know he is 6ft but that isn't really his main attribute.

I feel like Nakamba is athletic enough for the Prem he just can't do anything with the ball once he gets it. Puts our midfield under massive pressure when in possession. Ndidi is pretty much the gold standard for a Prem #6. Need to find our own version.

The other thing I don't get : I know people are routinely dismissing the Twitter talking point that Buendia signing means Grealish must be going but, their positions being different aside,  if we're not selling Grealish (if), how are we meant to keep spending £100m+ on players like this every summer without getting rinsed by Financial Fair Play? We don't have all the fictional revenue streams Man City have set up to be able to circumvent it

Pretty sure that Christian Purslow knows a few tricks to get around FFP.  I just can't see how Buendia signs for us UNLESS he has been told that the vision is for him to play with Jack.  It would be a massive gamble on his behalf - especially with clubs like Arsenal, Everton, etc being "interested" to some degree or another.  For outsiders Jack is Villa at the moment.  So if I was signing for the club I'd want to be reassured that he was staying before I signed on the dotted line.

Yeah I guess I'm ignoring that we already got away with selling our ground to ourselves under his watch. Dunno if the dream is to basically just do things that are functionally identical to what Man City did and be like "what?" if anyone kicks off

Oh well,  hopefully a shins-intact Grealish and Buendia are starting together on the first day of next season so I can distract myself from what a dang sewer football is

Quickly realized Mendy wasn't the answer to replace Kante and moved to sign Ndidi in the same season. If you get it right no one remembers the misses.

I'd say we would benefit from having a a tall specialist DCM in the squad. For some opponents having extra height would be useful. I think we would benefit from adding a Koopmenieers type player for example.

However I believe JWP would be perfect for us. His energy, tenacity, and passing would fit nicely between Luiz and McGinn, and his set pieces would address a clear weakness. So I'm all for this.

Contrary to some opinions of my fetish for height in a CDM.....I too would not be opposed to JWP.....I like the player.

problem is mention height or physicality and a stereotype is released in some folks brain, with no consideration of every other attribute needed for the role.....of course some superb CDM's are small.

He's not a CDM like other players people refer to. Just a CM in a 442 and Oriol Remeu is the one that plays the CDM role if any. Anyway guarantee the original rumour is made up

We were the most fouled team last year by far; it's not just Grealish. Traore runs at players and gets fouled. From what I see of his highlights, Buendia runs at players, so he will get fouled too. So it makes sense to have a good set piece taker.

But where do you fit WP in the side? Before this rumour broke, if we play 4-2-3-1, I figured first choice...

Watkins

Grealish - Buendia - Traore

McGinn - Luiz

Targett - Mings - Konsa - Cash

The DMs do the most running in this formation, and it showed last year. McGinn and Luiz were tired by February. McGinn got his second wind at the end of the season, but we need to rotate them. I assume that's why we bought Sanson. Ward-Prowse would give us a fourth DM. And three of them (WP, Luiz, Sanson) are right-footed. He would give us an overload there.

Maybe you use him in the Traore role. But then Traore becomes a substitute. I thought that Chukwuemeka would be our first-choice attacking sub on the right side; if Traore gets demoted, you would have two players behind WP as subs on the right. They're going to want to give Chewy time this year or he might want out; his contract expires in 2023, and if he wants out after this year (i.e. 2022), they will sell while they can get something for him. So I'm not sure WP fits over there. But maybe you use Chewy as a sub in the centre for Buendia.

Maybe you use WP at right back, which seems less likely. But maybe Cash's injury is more serious that they're saying. And Cash does make me nervous sometimes. He is an upgrade from Elmo, he's good going forward, he tackles well, but he loses players sometimes, either because of lack of concentration or lack of pace. So you could put WP over there...but I don't see it happening.

If they do sign WP, wherever the put him, we will have major competition for spots this year. On top of the above, you have JJ, Wesley...

is JWP genuine interest from us?.....or just a rumour.

I've made my thoughts clear. The original article reads...

Author understands Villa are looking to sign midfielders.

JWP is a good midfielder that scored a lot of free kicks.
