I’d love to know how much these clubs spent getting this project off the ground (briefly). I bet there’s a few million each wasted.

Part of me is a bit disappointed it’s collapsed as the more I think about it the more I think it would fail.

Yeah even if UEFA/FIFA might not hand out any major fines it would be nice if the clubs were forced to pony up money to the investors for breach of contract.

personally I prefer a transfer ban because Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool, Barcelona, Juventus all need to strengthen the squads this summer and a 2 year ban I think would make a few managers walk out

Spurs for example wouldnt be able to attract a half decent manager

yet didnt spend a cent on marketing or PR

I have created custom leagues on PES with better presentation than this

And they'll tell you that didn't choose to ignore it, they had to ignore it. It's this that's at the heart of everything here - there's a conceit that's so ingrained in the thinking of these clubs that no matter how insane the plans that it creates are, they can't see past the conceit to comprehend the insanity.

If you take as your starting point that Barcelona and Real Madrid should always be the biggest clubs in Europe, and you then build a corporate and sporting structure entirely around that assumption, then you can't allow better players to go to other clubs, it simply isn't possible within that scope. So the problem becomes the ridiculous amounts that those clubs are being forced into paying for these players. 

That's the perspective, in their minds it's not a choice for these clubs in having these players or not, it's a completely natural process, the best players should be at Barca and Real because Barca and Real should always be the biggest clubs in Europe.

The problem becomes that the costs of doing that have changed due to other clubs spending - not due to the spending of Barca and Real, but due to other clubs - that's the conceit.

So when they start looking at solutions to the problem, they start by looking at other clubs and how to reduce their spending, they look at where their advantage lies, in top line income, and they introduce FFP which they'd hope would limit the spending of clubs with a lower top line than they have - but that's not enough, they're still having to spend massively in order to keep those clubs at bay. So they move on to looking at how to stop those clubs earning enough money to be a problem, to defund the TV deals for those clubs and their leagues and increase their own income by concentrating the TV money into a smaller group of clubs in a similar situation; the Super League.

And then they're surprised by the strength of reaction because they don't know how mad it is, how insane it sounds, or why anyone else would be upset with it, because it's a sensible solution to the problem as they see it.

Perez still doesn't get it, neither does Laporte - they cant go back to the start and ask the question, "Should Barca and Real always be the biggest clubs in Europe?" They can't ask the question, it can't be given any sort of daylight, because just asking it exposes the complete madness of everything else, and no one wants to know that the thing they've worked on for their whole lives is based on a principle that makes no real sense. 

In their minds, their enormous debts are a problem that football has imposed on them by being somehow wrong, somehow unnatural, they see their actions as fixing that in some way, of balancing football properly and returning it to its natural order.

You can't expect them to stop doing that until they're willing to understand the fundamental problem that the realties of football should affect Barca and Real in the same way that they affect everyone else and I think the only way you can do that is through some sort of shock therapy. 

For me, that's still the removal of the key individuals involved from the game and an improved iteration of FFP that includes debt as its major indicator of clubs health, even though that enforces a decade of austerity on Barca and Real.

Then, once that's in place and there's an understanding that no one has a natural place in the order, that merit rules, start to look at salary caps and ways to reduce spending with the obstacle of elite protectionism having being at least in part removed, so that the game can become more sustainable but still allow clubs that do have huge fanbases to succeed, albeit with a much less skewed advantage.

I think Perez, Laporte and a number of the others involved are living in a world that's a lie they've created and developed and wrapped around themselves to the point they can't see anything else.

It's like the old balance of terror. If club A buy a player for £50m, then club B need a £60m player. And when there are enough clubs to cover the entire alphabet many times, then obviously the result is that money flow through these clubs like prune juice.

It's a problem that in itself is easy to solve. Limit the spending through a wage cap. Problem is that they don't want that solution as it means competition is open for everyone. So we have FFP which will limit spending with a link to the turnover. Which means big clubs can spend more than small. With the SL it will boost their turnover, make them sustainable and make them untouchable. Within FFP.

It reminds me very much of the empathy gap monoply game experiment. 

They will be back, so action is required now. Now it's 14 clubs vs 6 clubs. Next time it could be 12 vs 8 or 10 vs 10. They will share with as few as possible, but as many as necessary.

I can't see why the premier league is going to vote to be  a 18 team division and give more money to the efl, unless the majority vote systems is changed.

It's sounding like the PL has no interest in punishing these clubs other than removing certain individuals from committees, which doesn't seem like much punishment at all. 

These clubs need to feel pain and their owners need to lose money. Anything less and there is no deterrent to them trying this again.

I really don't think fans will let this lie if there aren't punishments.

what are the fans going to do though? really? are 1000s of us really going to go to VP every time we play one of these teams with banners? and other teams around the country going to do the same?

no doubt they should be punished...but aside from us all whinging on VT there really wont be much in the way of protests
