As frustrating as it is - and as much of a measure of the man as it is that this is what he's doing - you need to remember that this is a sign of weakness. He's doing this precisely *because* it doesn't look likely that he's going to win among the actual ballots cast.

Yes, it made that speech all the more bizarre.

Declaring he won, but also that there was a fraud of the American people (he is technically correct there).

His advisors must have said that he isn't going to win.

People don't like evidence, or research, they like tweet-length politics, where huge issues are narrowed down into "yes/no" answers, constant headlines with little details.

This is it and why I made my "genius" comment. We all laugh when he fires off 50 short tweets all in caps inside 30 minutes, but it works. He may not get over the line but he's far, far closer than he should be because he knows how to push peoples buttons.

Exactly this. You wouldn't resort to trying to steal it illegitimately if you thought you were going to win it legitimately. Frankly, I think the only reason it has happened so late is that earlier on in the night, results did seem to be going his way.

Silicon Valley facing pressure from Trump camp

James Clayton

North America technology reporter

Twitter and Facebook said they would label tweets from candidates that spread disinformation about voting, and sure enough that has happened.

Donald Trump's tweet saying "votes cannot be cast after the polls are closed" has been labelled with a warning.

Interestingly though, Twitter hasn't labelled a tweet from Trump saying the election was a "A big WIN!", while Facebook has. Twitter had previously said that it would label tweets from candidates claiming victory before a declared result.

Both social media companies will now face big pressure from the Trump campaign – which has already accused Twitter of being on a "mission to censor and silence the president".

Downballot, it has been a disappointing night for Democrats. They have flopped in the Senate, looking like they will take only one seat net, and even though they will retain control of the House, it looks like they will lose seats on net (having been predicted to gain up to a dozen before the election).

How the **** is this man not being wiped from the face of politics? After all he's done, after the way he's conducted himself? What is wrong with the American people?

It's a multitude of things isn't it? But this is politics now.  Shout loudest, lie the most, distort the smallest thing, talk a lot about nothing.

People don't like evidence, or research, they like tweet-length politics, where huge issues are narrowed down into "yes/no" answers, constant headlines with little details.

The precedence we're being set here is nothing but worrying.

Idiocracy is a real thing which used to be satirical.

The polarisation, the "us/them", the anti-unifying nature of Trumps administration is scary, but not scary enough to push people into hiding, it's bringing out the worst, most tribal instincts we have.

Politicians using "meme phrases" from videogame origins like "get owned", is worryingly popular.

You have women voting for trump because they think biden hugging and kissing kids he meets is "creepy", despite trump doing similar and having the history Jimmy Saville would be proud of.

It's like a frat house popularity contest, that middle-aged people are taking part in and actively enjoying.

It's also pretty evident that the huge problem for the Dems is gaining traction with the smaller counties with smaller towns - from what I saw, he lost almost all of the town's, but won the cities.

I feel now like I did when Boris landslided, when Brexit creeped over the line.. the democrats have failed to persuade the little guy, when they should be the lowest hanging fruit for a slightly more left-leaning choice.  Instead, we've got people who don't make much money, who are more likely to get sick, voting for big business protecting, environmentally damaging and health care cutting politics instead - it doesn't make sense.

Maybe the air of superiority and condescending nature of the global lefties is too annoying for the everyman.

Weird times.

Brilliant post

I always felt with Brexit that the press and other narratives did such a brilliant job of making regular, working class people feel like they had more in common with British elitists like Johnson and Farage than they did with other working class people in France, Germany, etc.

Same with Trump. For all his many flaws, he’s a reality TV show host. Literally appealing to a low common denominator in 200 odd characters and look - You seem to forget the bloke is a TV show host and a Billionaire by way of his Father.

Worlds gone mad man.
