Aston Villa are launching a £14 million bid for Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips. Phillips is emerging as one of Dean Smith’s top targets following promotion to the Premier League with Leeds ready to demand up to £20m for the 23-year-old.

Smith is prioritising a defensive midfielder after the departures of Glenn Whelan and Mile Jedinak and Phillips is seen as a player at the right age with vast potential after a stunning season in the Championship.

Born in Leeds and a product of the club’s highly regarded academy, Phillips has made over 135 appearances but could leave this summer after Marcelo Bielsa missed out on promotion.

Villa’s scouting team watched Phillips on numerous occasions over the season and the club are now ready to make an official bid in the next few weeks.

Villa have already signed Anwar El Ghazi, Jota and Kortney Hause this summer and, ideally, want to add another six to seven players to deepen the squad.

When did this happen?

From what I’ve seen which isn’t that much, he looks excellent, £14m is a lot of money for a Championship player and one that has never played in the Premier League. We are in desperate need of a DM and he fits the mould perfectly

Interesting, he's definitely Leeds most improved player. Biesla played him as a DCM and he was pretty much the fulcrum of their team.  Breakout season at 23 years of age. One for a few folks on here to take note of when it comes to writing off academy players!

Was impressive against us and sems like a really decent guy too.

Could potentially be a great signing but not without risk

How can you trust an article when there is an obvious lie in there like that

I’ve seen him play a few times and always been impressed.

Don’t know if he’s worth the fee, but if anybody has seen the absolute meltdown amongst the Leeds fans about this on Twitter, it’s worth it just for that.

He is still 23 though so if he does well in premier league he will be worth a lot more in years to come.

Have to say at elland road he was really good against us. Him and Conor will have to hug it out though!!

My concern would be the fee, they won’t be accepting £14m that’s for sure.

Why not? He’s never played in the Premier League before but of course, we are talking about Leeds here

He’s a vast upgrade on Connor and he’s younger too, the only downside is that he’s a bit of a thug. Smith has obviously seen that we need toughening up and is addressing that

I'm not sure about buying a championship player with one good season for so much money.

He didn't even appear to be that good.

Surely better elsewhere?

Percy is generally pretty reliable as sources go the. He might know the deal for Kortney is effectively done.

I trust Smith, Phillips will only improve over time, it is a lot of money but at least it shows we have money and we are showing ambition and not messing around

That’s a downside? A few months ago Tyrone Mings was a mass murderer apparently.

If you want people to believe your article then it's best to use facts, he could have said "close to signing", he must know he would lose credibility by stating something as fact when every reader knows its not the case yet
