The Athletic article says that he wasn’t happy with his role as 4th in the pecking order as Terry’s replacement will be above him. Stayed to help prepare for the season but now training is more structured and set he is leaving. He could have stayed, there was no fall out with Smith or the club he just wasn’t happy with his reduced role. According to the Athletic he won’t be replaced and are only looking to replace Terry’s role.

Hiring more specialist coaches. It's the done thing In America for instance and can work just as well in Football too. You have coaches that will work with just offensive linemen, linebackers, backs, wide receivers, cornerbacks etc. Rather than general coaches. You need guys to have an overview too, like head coaches and assistant coaches. I think it's the way it's going. We have hired a set piece coach for instance.

thing with the NFL is though is that the positions themselves are very specialist, so you NEED specialist coaches. wide receivers' only job is to run the route they're told and catch the ball if it comes to them. field goal kickers have 1 job. defensive tackles just have to battle to get to the QB. with football, you can't just have a 'striker' coach because so much more is expected of them. not to mention the stop/start aspect to NFL whereas footy is more free flowing so coaches need to be a jack of all trades, to an extent

i'd imagine a set piece coach is pretty much the only specialist role you can have in footy (aside from maybe GK and fitness coaches) and i'd hope our new guy has arrived armed with an NFL style playbook for corners, etc. "ty make that run, ezri makes that run, frees space up here for the taker to deliver the ball to" etc etc

I’m sure I read somewhere once that Liverpool have a throw in coach.

I also think they are one of the best teams around at taking advantage of no offsides in throw ins.

Graham Taylor was widely mocked by the England players for focusing on set pieces and throw ins. Kind of funny now that is seemed archaic at the time and yet here we are back on again on the fine margins and importance of "restarts"

Don't think there is anything here. He was Deano's got to guy in the lower leagues. And is clearly a top man.

We've brought in Terry and Shakespeare - so his role is massively diminished. Plus we've just brought in a set piece coach. What did he actually do?

I expect a club of our size to have some movement in it's backroom staff every year, just to change to voices and freshen things up. I expect a new, younger coach (like Terry was) to come in over the coming months to continue this.

Good luck to him, and thank you for your role in our recent success.

“It’s no big surprise and there’s no sinister in it at all. Knowing Richard as well as I do, he’s a selfless person and it wouldn’t have been an easy decision he’s had to make. But it’s one that would have been in his mind for the last month or two.

“And I think he’s just made a professional decision where he’s seen the progress of the football club and just felt it was time to step aside.

“With JT leaving and myself being off during isolation, Richard probably stayed on and didn’t make the decision as early as he probably wanted to.

“As I say, we’re in the process of replacing JT but I believe bringing in Austin MacPhee as a specialist coach adds to our ranks along with myself, Craig Shakespeare and Neil Cutler.

“I’ll miss Richard, personally, because he’s a very close friend of mine, I’ve learned an awful lot from him and had an awful lot of support from him as well.

“But I understand his reasons and he goes with our best wishes.”

I've always wondered why football doesn't do more of this. Yes the squads are significantly smaller than an NFL roster, but the idea of coaches specialising in set positions makes a lot of sense.

I think it may be due to the offence and defence in NFL are completely separate. On the field at separate times, so almost like 2 different teams. They can do their own things.

Yeah but even with offense, you'll have a coach focused on QBs and a coach working with Wide Recievers.

I like the idea behind it.

Good on Smith for confirming there is nothing sinister in it. ROK has always been a lower league man, maybe he just didn't feel comfortable now, training big name players and the demands of it.

It takes a big man to make a decision like that. Having a life in football I'd say he'll find a new challenge and he can help another club get where they want to be or maybe he'll call it a day and enjoy a great retirement.

Doubt it'll shut up the doom mongers.

He announced to everyone inside the club that needed to know, what’s weird about that ? There was no need to announce it to the world his contract had finished end of story. He might have had enough, or might have had a more exciting offer, who knows?

Dean Smith has confirmed he only found out this week. A bit frustrating that he’s left right on the eve of the season and we’ve had no time to plan for his replacement.

I think the clue is in that.....but fair play to him, good guy, deserves our best wishes.

I agree and mentioned earlier that it takes a big man to do this and walk away. I fancy him to have a break then roll his sleeves up and get back on it.
