GarethRDR
If you could forgive someone absolutely everything just because they happen to be "Villa through and through", then half the threads on this forum wouldn't exist.
Condimentalist
RIP deadly. He was a character, and a massive part of the club. Thoughts to his family and friends.
CosmicVillan
Like him or loathe him he was a character for sure. With the new owners and coaching structure this really feels like a line has been drawn under 'old Villa and the old remnants swept away. Nobody is ever truly good or bad, we're a complicated mixture of thoughts, deeds and emotions. I think history will look favourably on Doug's Stewardship of Aston Villa particularly with what's happened since. Running a successful football club is far harder than most of us will know. He literally was Villa till he died.

I think out of respect we should at least wait until he is cold. Start of next week would be fine though. In all seriousness it is a bit of a farce that given all the success we have had and all those that made massive contributions to the club we have a stand named after a man under whose almost 30 years involved with the club we had two league cups to show for. There are many who are much more worthy. It does perhaps sum up the man though that he held himself in such high regard that he felt he was worthy of naming a stand after.

Popular Post blandy Posted October 11, 2018 Moderator Popular Post Share Posted October 11, 2018 He lived a long and privileged life. For those who have lost a father, husband, friend, mentor or someone they admired from a distance - condolences on your loss. He was innovative in one way - the first chairman to pay himself for running a club and one positive of him for me was that through opposition to the way he ran the club, I've made some enduring friendships, IRL and online, through the campaigns to encourage him to depart the club, so there's that.
Popular Post Robbie09
Having been a STH since the early 70’s I’ve seen the good and bad sides of HDE so I understand why some won’t remember him as fondly as others. I’ve been a critic of his however as some have pointed out there’s a family grieving for their loss today. Yes HDE probably benefited more from AVFC than vice versa but it will feel odd travelling to away games without seeing his personalised plate somewhere en route. There’s been many occasions on a wet and windy day when I’ve questioned why I’ve wasted a day out watching yet another turgid defeat but I’m 40 years younger that Doug and he still had the desire to follow our wonderful team. He will be remembered and I hope people put their views aside and pay the respect a 94 year old deserves.

A custodian of a great club. RIP Sir Doug. I wish the private family man Doug Ellis a truly peaceful rest. It's not like he is evil or anything. BUT! The chairman of Aston Villa Doug can well and truly rot. I will never forgive him for this. 1 3

The Fun Factory
Rip Doug. I don't think it is the time to go through the rights and wrongs of his long ownership of the club. However he has left an impact on the fabric of the club more than any chairman since Frederick Rinder. Condolences to the family.
