Popular Post Stevo985 Posted November 10, 2017 VT Supporter Popular Post Share Posted November 10, 2017 (edited) The latest Football Ramble special is an interview with Chris Kirkland. It's worth a listen, genuinely interesting stuff. Anyway, the bit that really caught my attention was his discussion about English goalkeeper coaches vs foreign goalkeeper coaches. Kirkland basically attributes his loss of form at Liverpool and later at Wigan to the fact that Benitez and Martinez both brought in Spanish goalkeeper coaches. He said the style of coaching is completely different to the English style. Says the Spanish coaches are a lot more laid back, the routines and drills don't work you as hard and it's generally just a totally different approach. He acknowledged that they were fine coaches and the methods obviously work for some keepers, but that he just couldn't get on with the change in style and ultimately his form dipped significantly because he was going into games feeling unprepared. Said that he had grown up on a certain style of coaching and felt that's what had gotten him to where he was and moving away from that affected him a lot. It got me thinking that maybe this was what Gollini was getting at when he allegedly requested that he had an Italian goalkeeper coach when he was her. I know a lot of us (myself included) were quick to attribute that to arrogance or some weird xenophobic attitude, but maybe it was the style of coaching that he really cared about? Gollini spent time at Fiorentina and Manchester United in his youth career, before going back to Verona prior to Villa. So he has experience of both cultures and styles of coaching. So it could well be that he knew himself that he progressed best when he was learning from an Italian coach. It may have suited his style and he may have felt that the English style wasn't what got the best out of him, so maybe it was the method of coaching that he was really trying to preserve as opposed to merely the nationality of the guy coaching him. That's all speculation, but it does seem much more innocent now that I've listened to that Kirkland interview. Especially when Gollini was quoted saying Quote "I played a great deal at Villa, but I wasn’t happy with the training regime.” It does start to sound remarkably similar to the Kirkland situation. Craigy1874
So on that basis he should be playing well while back in Italy then? Anyone know if he is?

He's behind current Albania international keeper Etrit Berisha who's been in sensational form the last year or so. 11 clean sheets last season. Atlanta finished 5th last season. So hard to tell how Gollini is progressing. But from our standpoint you'd think we'd want our player out on loan to be playing games.

Czechlad
Weird loan. Would rather have him sitting on our bench instead of Atlanta's. Gollini was never a bad keeper.

Seems Johnstone has responded well by being pushed by him as well

I think the purpose - the only purpose of the loan was to get his wages off the books till we can arrange a permanent exit. He ain't coming back. Spoony
One of the many players I forgot still plays for Villa. Agree with the above though, he was farmed out to get him off our books so no one from the club will care if he’s playing or not.

Has he been playing their europa league games? I think it's fair to say he won't be coming back here. Another Seria A team will pick him up. I read Benitez's book a while ago and Kirkland's argument came up. I think Rafa's response to him was "Chris, how many English keepers play at champions league clubs again....?"

He's on what, £15-20k/w. We have tons of players earning way more sitting in the stands doing f all except draining the club for money. I think unlike some others like Gabby he actually wanted to go out on loan. We have far to many players on massive wages feeling too comfortable here. VillaChris
Surprised he's not playing in europe. European teams always play their second choice keeper in cup competitions.

Also with the Europa League now offering a back way into the Champions League I think even bigger clubs might have started to field stronger teams. TheAuthority Posted November 11, 2017 VT Supporter Share Posted November 11, 2017 It was absolute madness for RDM to think an untested, inexperienced keeper could come to a different country and be the main man in goal for a club of our size. A club that had just been relegated and was facing a massive squad overhaul. The goalkeeper position is the first place you look for experience and it was absurd to think that Gollini could have been that guy. I can't believe Round or Wyness let him get away with it either.

Czechlad
Gollini wasn't even a bad keeper. Yes he made a few mistakes that dropped us points, but he also made some really good saves as well. Plus having the likes of Richards, Hutton, Elphick, Bacuna, Tshibola, Westwood, Gardner, etc as starters in front of him didn't help. 2
tonyh29
I suppose you could almost draw parallels with Johnston ... made a few mistakes early doors , cost us a few points Now Johnstone is a strong contender for player of the season , no idea if Gollini could have done the same thing though
Phumfeinz
Gollini goes back to Italy and they fail to qualify for the world cup for the first time in 60 years. Coincidence? 2
