The_Steve
Di Canio suspends Bardsley from Sunderland after defender mocks Fulham defeat Sunderland defender Phil Bardsley has been suspended from the club immediately and indefinitely by manager Paolo Di Canio after mocking the opening day defeat to Fulham on-line. Sportsmail was the first to break news that Bardsley would be in hot water after his reaction to Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat. And the strict Sunderland boss has reacted decisively and told Bardsley to stay away from the club’s Academy of Light training ground. It is not known how long his suspension from the club will be implemented. Bardsley sent a message to supporters who had posted pictures on Instagram writing: `Great opening day. Hahahhahaha hahahhaha!!!’ It provoked a furious reaction from unhappy supporters over the weekend and Bardsley met his manager and other club officials yesterday who demanded an explanation. Sportsmail understands the former Manchester United defender has been `fully suspended’. He is now expected to be sold within days, with Fulham ironically one of the few clubs interested in taking him off Di Canio’s hands. It is the second time Bardsley has upset the club, Di Canio and fans on-line. In May, just days before their final league game at Tottenham Hotspur, he was pictured on the floor of a Newcastle casino covered in £50 notes. He was dropped from the squad and spent the whole summer with the Under 21 squad until he was injured last week in a friendly. Bardsley was not given a squad number by Di Canio last week. Captain Lee Cattermole, who has not actually played a game under Di Canio, has been treated similarly although he was given the number 33 in the new list. However his familiar Number 6 was given to new signing Cabral, one of five players to make his Sunderland debut at the weekend. SikhInTrinity
Agree Mantis, as most likely he won't get much from previous 3 and fans will want to win against Newcastle at home, he loses that, their fans will turn.

The Fun Factory
Much as I like watching a car crash, I do think Sunderland were a bit unlucky on Saturday. It could go either way under Di Canio, the players could gell and they do ok, or they could crash and burn. I do have a bit of time for Sunderland fans. Haven't won anything in 40 years and still get over 40,000 in virtually every home game.

That's a fairly accurate summary of how I imagine their season panning out on the whole.
pacbuddies
Sunderland have to be a good bet to get relegated along with Hull City and Crystal Palace.
Stevo985 Posted August 20, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted August 20, 2013 Depends how soon it all goes wrong (and I'm convinced it will) and whether they fix it quickly. I'd put money on that already being a not very happy dressing room. I was thrilled to see them lose. After all the bollocks about their pre-season we'd heard, about how they were so well trained and they were going to be fitter than ever. To see them lose to a late goal after a relatively dreary match made me smile.
maqroll
Knucklehead. Glad he didn't stick around at Villa longer than he did.
Jimzk5
Surprised he gave catermole the boot, thought he would be the perfect di canio player. I don't mind Sunderland, id take them over alot of other clubs in England but dicanio is a real prick.
Rob182
The funny thing with Di Canio is that he WAS the exact type of player that he now seems to hate. Remember when he sulked in that West Ham game, where he basically stopped playing and almost sat on the floor until the fans started chanting his name? The moment he stopped running, if he had himself as his manager, he would have been punched in the head, thrown down the tunnel and sold the next day! (For this to happen, we'd need Di Canio to go back in time and get the job as West Ham manager)
villa4europe
I don't mind Sunderland, id take them over alot of other clubs in England so would I until I ventured on to their board when we signed Darren Bent must be a north east thing... The Fun Factory
I dont really get Di Canio. When I went down to watch the Villa V West Ham in the Houllier season, the upton park club shop had Di Canio scarfs. I mean it was about 10 years since he last played for him and he was only at West Ham for about 5 years?! He was a decent player but hardly a great. If he was a British manager would he have got a Premier League job on the basis that has got a decent league two side with money promoted to league one? Mantis
I don't think he got the Sunderland job because he's foreign or because of what he did at Swindon, but because he's a nut would give them a short term boost and keep them up (which he did). I think he'll prove to be a dreadful choice in the longterm though,
CarewsEyebrowDesigner
I think themselves and Newcastle will survive because, at bit like ourselves a few times, there are a few worse teams out there.
Panto_Villan
I went on the Sunderland boards to see what their thoughts were on the relegation battle towards the end of last season. Most of the posters seemed to be barely literate and communicating mostly in swear words. I hope they get relegated. Di Canio is going to be a total disaster, anyway. If you treat people the way he treats them, it just becomes a question of time until you've alienated literally everybody whose support you rely on to stay in the role.
