Ashley Young

In baseball, most good ball clubs have a specialist Utility Player on the bench. Somebody they can plug in at a number of positions late in games, in case of injury, and to keep everybody fresh. That’s exactly how I see this playing out.

Not sure if you can draw comparisons between rounders and football Doug.

Love it!!

Just hope he don't use us as a last pay packet like used to happen it the ole days. To be fair though, I don't think the fans would allow it of Young, knowing the player he was.

It's a 12 month deal though so it's a win win. Plus he's a competitive so and so therefore he'll want to be starting games.

Quote intrigued to see how much football Ashers actually plays this season.  I find it very unlikely he has came here to sit on our bench.

I get that he's a sensible solution to our full back cover situation but he could have easily got a game elsewhere.  Dunno, cool signing though.  The last player I had on the back of a Villa shirt was Young.  Loved him.

Well he ain't replacing Targett or Cash.

We aren't using a 36 year old as a winger. Simply because he doesn't have the legs for it and he isn't that player anymore. That Ash who used to beat people with explosive pace and agility isn't the Ash who we just signed.

He will play cup games and cover for Cash/Targett during suspensions, injuries etc. Can't see him playing more than 5-10 league games tbh.

People says it's disrespectful but he is basically Elmo 2.0

I have nothing at all against Elmo but doubt he'd seen much pitch time in Inter last season. Young clearly has more about him still and while I don't see him starting much on the wing he can be a useful substitute there when defending a lead for example

Been away a couple days, but yeah, I think Targett would be even better if he was a little ripped, which he is not. Keep the muscle, lose the fat.

However, this thread is for Ash, who I believe will play lots next season. Our FBs, especially Targett, improved a lot last season, but are not untouchable at all. Additionally Young can play several other positions where we are currently weak, including midfield. What an excellent addition he is.

And I'm OK with that

We don't have to do everything in one summer, in fact it's unrealistic to think that we will

The £20-30m LB that long term will challenge and replace Targett can be bought next summer, this year we have more important areas of improvement

I think you are  underestimating him a touch. He has played well  30 games in the  each of the last 4 seasons for Man U and Inter. Obviously still fit and raring to go.

I don't think he is here just to warm the bench. I think he will play quite a big part in several positions this season. I think he could be involved in 25-30 games for us starting or off the bench.

Giggs played into his forties and adapted his game from a blistering winger to a central midfielder.

Ok Young has never been at that level but he has shown intelligence and adaptability throughout his career.

His experience could  well be important for us next season. I am warming to this signing.

Since Young left Villa he has worked with Fergie, Conte, Mourinho, Van Gaal, Moyes and Ole

I think Ole was the only one not to find a place for him

He was still captain for a number of games.
