Seat68
I retain information related to music, everything else just goes in then goes out. Everything.

I don't mean individual people knowing stuff about individual specialised things like Lapal and Thomas the Tank Engine or Xela's Pub signage . I mean one single person knowing it all in fine detail about what seems to be literally everything. Memory and retention of information. I think intelligence and recall are often overlapped and confused. Some people can be extremely good in school or at quizzes or whatever because they retain information. It purely comes down to memory, imo. Other people would be able to design a rocket engine, but would probably leave with nothing on Who Wants to be a Millionaire. I read a lot of stuff about a lot of shit. Like if I find an album I like or a book or a film, I won't just listen to it, I'll read about it and take in all this information. I'm convinced if I had a better memory I'd be one of the people you're talking about. But I don't, I forget most of it 5 minutes after I've read it I guess the difference is the people you're on abotu would do that sort of thing, but they'd retain the information. Then I suggest that, that person doesn't really exist - only the very few, like Rain Man

I also can't resist following up information, I like to learn things, and I have a wide range of interests - hence I'm pretty good at quizzes. But 'know everything about everything'? Nah, no chance. As VT regulars will know, I have vast swathes of total ignorance about stuff that other people know. If I'm not interested in it, I just don't care. Yep, things I'm interested in, they are locked in and they are instantly retrievable. Stuff about bands, about how a picture on an album cover came about. Names of non-league footballers from the 80's, How to tune up a VW Beetle. Year by year modifications that identify what year a particular turntable or speaker was manufactured. Boom., it's in. What energy company I'm with, where's the car insurance. the name of the new guy in work, how to get the office printer to print to A1 size. 'Chart' music of the last 20 years. Disney, Marvel, wrestling, the Man Utd / Chelsea / Liverpool manager. Nope. I'll need telling 5 minutes after I've been told for the 10th time.
mjmooney Posted September 20, 2017 Author VT Supporter Share Posted September 20, 2017 For most people, short term memory deteriorates before long term. Hence the old codger phenomenon of which I am all too aware - I can tell you in detail about something that happened fifty years sgo, but I don't know where I put my glasses down or why I came into this room.
Xann
Occasionally I go out with a Mastermind champion for drinks. She's quite full on. Defo on the spectrum. Her friends help her out with life a bit. Her knowledge of ancient cities is great, her social skills however...

Chindie Posted September 20, 2017 VT Supporter Share Posted September 20, 2017 I tend to read into things that interest me and have an almost autistic need to understand the things behind the things that I initially looked into of interest. I also read a lot and I largely listen to informative stuff on podcasts and so on. So I end up knowing lots about a variety of stuff, but also things were I'm pretty clueless because they don't interest me at all. The odd thing is the things that capture my imagination are very widespread. Which makes people think I'm generally very knowledgeable - I can talk about films obsessively and have loads of random facts about dozens just sat in my head, but equally can have in depth conversations about international politics and the nuance of terrorism, before going into the history of very obscure comic characters, then flipping into a discussion of weird alleged alien encounters. The people I work with think I'm somehow some kind of super brain who knows everything... I don't at all.
mjmooney Posted September 20, 2017 Author VT Supporter Share Posted September 20, 2017 TBH, I'm baffled by people who don't seem to have any interest in anything beyond their immediate existence. Go to work come home, watch junk TV, lie on a beach once a year, etc. ad infinitum.

Constantly bumming Thomas "you told us we could ANYTHING Thomas, I believe in you!" - when Thomas was challenged to a distance/heavy load race by Spencer (who is a Mallard (big strong engine)) - what a **** idiot he is. Not only could Thomas have damaged himself whilst racing with a heavy load (his brakes broke on a hill), but Thomas, as a small tank engine would never have the coal capacity to go further than an engine with a tender, he couldn't pull it as fast, being a smaller, weaker engine - and he put the safety of other people/engines at risk. Just shut the **** up and pull your shitty milk and mail trucks you knob. Gordon is very cocky, but he's the biggest native engine on Sodor, and pulls the express, so **** everyone else. I like James because he's a proper word removed. Constantly talking about how big and strong he is (despite being smaller than Henry, Gordon and other engines), constantly goes on about how amazing his paint work is (he's right, red and black is the best colour scheme, look at Milan) and he once got covered in bees and didn't give a single **** until one stung him on the nose. Thomas is alright - he's changed though. He used to be cheeky and funny (scaring the shit out of Gordon mostly when he was resting/sleeping in sidings after pulling the express). But now he's just cheerful and helpful and stuff, so he's lost his edge - a bit like Klopp now he's in charge of Liverpool. No one fears him or respects him anymore. 2
