Insane that Mainoo gets a call up after 15 caos, yet Ramsey was on fire last season and didn’t get a look in. Grealish had to prove himself. Konsa consistently overlooked. Mental.

Mainoo may well turn into a fantastic footballer, but how he's done enough to warrant an England first team place at this stage is utterly baffling (and I'll admit, I don't watch Man Utd games so maybe he's utter class all the time).

Imagine a Villa player getting into the England squad after 10 first team games. Grealish was about 150 and Ramsey still not in one at about 100 games. Likewise if Grealish and Ramsey were at Man U would have taken them about 20 to 30 games.

Probably yes, but kind of so what? For most of that United have been far above us in the table and playing European football.

Probably wouldn't call up someone after 20 games for Rotherham either.

Not for Mainoo when he played his last 15 games or so for Manure.

Sorry, I'm confused, not what?

EDIT: Oh okay, sorry, I see, they're not in Europe. Yes that's true.

Mason Mount had 30 odd games for Derby and got a call up

Mainoo potentially replaces henderson or phillips in that line up

its a bit damned if he does damned if he doesn't, in isolation only looking at mainoo you can happily argue he shouldn't be there but when you look at the alternatives you can argue that they are worse, you cant compare him to ramsey its 2 different roles and opportunities, the opportunity is 100% there for an alternative DMC to play

Mainoo is a proper player and we're severely lacking in CM. It's a no brainer to call him up or do we just play Henderson until he's 40 and Phillips.

Agree

It's too easy to just look at Mainoo and say he's not good enough, you've got to look at everyone else too, we moan about Henderson we moan about phillips, maybe Southgate finally moves on and we moan about that too

He can't be worse than phillips

I've no problem with Mainoo getting a call up but I struggle to believe it happens if he wasn't playing for a 'big club' and there in lies the problem with Southgate's selections. He places far too much value on who someone plays for rather than how well or regularly they are playing. Players that play for the 'others' have to do a lot more to even get an opportunity.

Issue is Mainoo maybe a great talent but have seen nothing personally to throw him into a a World Cup. As a 4th choice for experience its fine but not like this

He is better than Phillips and maybe Henderson but neither should be in the squad either

Mainoo situation is different from the other players he's being compared to, such as some of ours that have had to wait for England call-ups, he's in the squad partly based on him playing well this season and England not having many other choices, but also he's in there because of how highly rated he is as a youngster with an extremely high ceiling, so it's not just about what he can do now, but what he can learn and the experience he can gain with the future in mind.

People on this very forum have said, they would rather have Kellyman in our squad over such and such much more experienced player, it's not much different concept to Mainoo being in England squad ahead of someone like Phillips

Also probably worth pointing out that there had been a lot of talk of Ghana trying to call up Mainoo to their first team, so there's probably an element of protecting against that, England and Southgate have recently been criticized for losing players to other nations because of refusing to cap them whilst they were still academy players, Musiala being a recent example, he was playing for England youth teams, had lived most of his life in England, had spent most of his career in the academy system in England, probably would have chose England if they'd have offered to cap him at a young age, but had principles against that, and it has cost them a very good player

If Mainoo actually comes out of the centre circle he'll be an upgrade on Henderson.

Anyone know if Mainoooooooooooooo is in the squad?

Palmer should get a start now which is the whole point of these friendlies.

Your joking. Southgate needs to have a look at Kane, see if he still has it 😂

Mainoo clearly has some talent but not ready for England. I’m surprised Angel Gomes hasn’t had a look in. Played England u21s, and apparently playing well out in France, is a holding midfielder
