Not your usual stand up show but his rambling, sometimes awkward and often spiralling off on tangents delivery was very good. His show is centred around the exploits of a Polish aunt during the second world war but veers off regularly to other random stories. Well worth checking out. Saw his work in progress of this show a year or so ago. Absolutely loved it. He could read out a phone book and I'd be in hysterics, mind. 1
leemond2008 Posted March 2, 2023 Posted March 2, 2023 thought this was a pretty good video, poor **** was really struggling afterwards but the crowd were right behind him
AVFC_Hitz Posted March 3, 2023 Posted March 3, 2023 I never 'understood' Chapelle before, but now I've dived into his repotoire the man was/is a 'kin genius. 2

Seat68 Posted March 3, 2023 Author Posted March 3, 2023 Chapelle, arguably cannot be taken out of context and unfortunately he is often taken out of context. For me he is the best working today, perhaps only Stewart Lee comes close but I can watch Dave Chapelle and know that every single word will be important to the delivery. 3

Seriously, he can’t be beaten for timing and delivery. If you find his material funny or not, he was probably the most technically gifted and skilled of them all. An absolute master of language and oratory.
Chindie Posted March 3, 2023 VT Supporter Posted March 3, 2023 Carlin is one of the most influential stand ups ever, certainly on the late 80s - 90s onwards philosophically minded US comedians. It's hard to come to his work now given that so much he did that was revolutionary or revelatory at the time became foundational for the people that followed. 1

That's fair enough really, it is all a matter of opinion with these things. Whenever I've watched him over the years I've felt like he's talking down to people, very much like Bill Maher if you know of him.
sne Posted March 5, 2023 Posted March 5, 2023 Chris Rock going scorched earth on Will Smith and Jada Pinkett. You love to see it, Smith's gotten off way to easy imo 1

Never got that vibe from Carlin at all, but yeah, it’s a matter of opinion. I just think it’s hard to see how Carlin’s influence and sheer technical skill can be overrated, but hey.
Davkaus Posted March 5, 2023 Posted March 5, 2023 We saw Reg D Hunter last night. Not his own show, he just had a slot at the local comedy club, so headlining but not a proper tour or anything, he was trying out some new material and it was only his third gig of the year. I couldn't really tell it was meant to be new material because it was basically the same jokes about him being a black American in England that he's been telling for 20 years. First night at the comedy in bloody ages though. Curry, a few beers, and the baby with the grandparents. That's a perfect Saturday night even if that's acts aren't fantastic. 4

Kuwabatake Sanjuro Posted March 7, 2023 Posted March 7, 2023 Lasted less than 10 minutes with the Chris Rock thing, the man used to be funny 30 years ago but not anymore. A very lazy 10 minutes of comedy/anti-woke rant followed up by some weird Elon Musk dick sucking (a man so desperate for sex he is willing to buy his employee a horse for hand job). I turned it off then. 1

BOF Posted March 7, 2023 Moderator Posted March 7, 2023 I saw the Will Smith slap for the first time yesterday. I had managed to avoid it and all that **** bollocks until yesterday on a news programme.

I turned it off then. I persevered with it and found it very funny in parts, but there was quite a lot of predictable material… also he seems a bit jaded from drugs / porn / life and his delivery isn’t as sharp as it used to be. I think the last but one Chapelle special (or maybe the one before that.. whichever one it is with the Kevin Spacey joke) is the best thing Netflix have put out. They seem to be really investing heavily in not very funny “I’m <race>, haha” comedians these days who make the same old jokes about being white / Black / Asian in America and then a lot of anti woke / shock comedy shit. Think the art of comedy where the subject matter is just a hook for them to drag you all over the place and make you laugh in unexpected ways is missing. Or maybe we’ve just watched too much comedy and can see the jokes coming from a mile off. There’s a bit in the Chris Rock special where he talks about abortion that I thought was genuinely good in this way.
tomsky_11 Posted March 19, 2023 Posted March 19, 2023 Anyone going to this in May? Found out about his adult swim show from VT so guess someone might be.
Davkaus Posted March 31, 2023 Posted March 31, 2023 I was hoping to grab some James Acaster tickets this morning, but his shows going on general sale have managed to DDOS not only his own website but every theatre he's appearing in 1
