Musk's Twitter Purchase

Apple have enough cash on hand to buy Tesla and Twitter. It's a fight he can't win.

@bickster has mentioned how poorly Google has done with their hardware up against Apple. It's worse than that, because he's not fighting with hardware if they get delisted in the app stores, he's fighting the Apple and Google ecosystems.

On the google thing they have the bigger market share of the mobile phone market with about 70% of handsets using their OS.

They are generating $19bn a year just from Android.

The stock market is getting off the Musk hype train more and more with every day he runs Twitter into the ground. Tesla's valuation was never based on sanity, and he's really ramming that home.

Just wait until the shareholder class action lawsuits start. That's going to be great fun.

WHEN Tesla’s stock price collapses it’s going go send shockwaves through the world economy.

I think you underestimate the influence musk has. Yes he has haters but the guys got more money than any individual he can cause apple some massive problems.

Even if its not in their iphone usage im sure he can come up with other ways to compete with apple.

For every billion you claim they ahve their are billions who dont use them

Musk doesn't have more money than any individual. He has more TSLA stock than any individual. In terms of liquid cash wealth he's nowhere near someone like Warren Buffett.

In order to turn his wealth into cash, Musk would have to tank the price of TSLA by selling his stock.

And I've no idea what the relevance of billions not using iPhones is. We were talking about Apple losing customers...

If Apple removes the twitter app, I expect Google to remove it from the Play Store shortly after for the same reasons.

As I understand it, twitter owns their own infrastructure, otherwise they'll need to be keeping Amazon / Google / Alibaba / Microsoft on board for their infrastructure.

Musk promised not to sell any Tesla stock. He lied. The stock has fallen >40% since September.

Musk will beat them with the first phone to work from Mars, it'll be launched next year.

The phone is also a boat.

Maybe Elon can make friends with the boys at Huawei?

Why not, his Russian connections are already triggering govenment agency responses, he might as well go all in on a pair

The US increased their sanctions on Huawei only last week as it happens

I don't think it will, there's lots of investors who have shorted Telsa stock they want it to fail. Telsa is like Facebook or Twitter for that matter, its a brand not a business. If Exxon Mobil or Nestlé stock prices collapsed then you'd see a shock wave. They are "real" businesses, not speculation.

I think Apple and Google have shown their approach to unexpected competition in their markets - they don't buy the competition, they buy Presidents.

Huawei phone is the best I've ever had. Wish I could still get a up to date one which had Google functionality.

If this continues, I think Apple & Google may have no option but to remove Twitter from their platforms, it really doesn't matter how much Musk shit tweets Apple, this won't even be a decision made on political grounds, it'll be made on not getting their arse handed to them on plates by regulators grounds. Selected highlights from a decent article on the issues about CSAM material on Twitter

To think that this is something that he can take Apple on and win, is delusional enough but what he's actually taking on is governments all around the world

If he carries this on, say bye bye to Twitter and Musk will say bye bye to $44bil (and a huge chunk of his Tesla investment which he used as collateral)

Musk faces fines if Twitter’s gutted child safety team becomes overwhelmed
Already overworked child safety team went from 20 to less than 10 members.

A few weeks ago, Twitter CEO Elon Musk asked his remaining staff for a show of loyalty by prompting them to click a "yes" link in an email. By clicking yes, the employees were telling Musk that they agreed to work longer hours—if they could keep their jobs. It was Musk’s way of seeing who on his existing team was truly ready to fall in line behind his “hardcore” efforts to build Twitter 2.0. Musk quickly learned how unattractive his offer was when an overwhelming number of employees did not click yes, and among those rejecting Musk’s severe terms was apparently almost half of Twitter’s global team dedicated to preventing child sexual exploitation on the platform.

Three people familiar with Twitter’s current staffing told Bloomberg that when 2022 started, Twitter had 20 team members responsible for reviewing and escalating reports of child sexual abuse materials (CSAM). Today, after layoffs and resignations, there are fewer than 10 specialists forming what Bloomberg described as “an overwhelmed skeleton crew.” It seems that despite Musk continually tweeting that blocking CSAM is Twitter’s top priority and even going so far as inviting users to tweet CSAM directly at him, Musk may already be losing his battle to keep the material off Twitter.[...]

[...]

According to Wired, there’s only one child safety team member left to handle all the reports coming from the Asia-Pacific region. This means Twitter has one expert who understands both regional laws to coordinate with law enforcement and evolving code words used in languages other than English in that region to evade detection.

In the early morning hours today, Musk was awake and tweeting, insisting that removing CSAM from Twitter “will forever be our top priority.”

It’s a responsibility that he can't dodge. Unlike blocking hate speech and misinformation—which can, in some cases, violate Twitter rules—Musk is legally required to block CSAM on his platform.[,,,]

[...]In September, when Twitter still had a spokesperson, Celeste Carswell told Reuters that Twitter was “investing more resources dedicated to child safety, including hiring for new positions to write policy and implement solutions.” Ars couldn’t find any current job listings for child safety positions[...]

He'll never take Apple customers anyway. It's like a religion to them. They'll never move to Android phones, they look down their noses at them.

The brand is as rock solid as it gets. They're far more likely to walk away from Twitter and Tesla for taking a pot at their precious Apple.

As crazy as when he allowed people to buy blue ticks for pocket change and people started impersonating big businesses, tweeting nonsense and wiping billions off share prices?

He can, especially in dysfunctional spaces like crypto. My point is I don’t think Apple are scared of him in the slightest, and I don’t think they have any reason to be.

Apple isn't choosing this fight, Musk is. Apple have no option but to respond (read article I posted above). Musk can shit talk all he likes about Apple, they are only doing what they have to to keep themselves out of a huge regulationary battle. They'd rather battle a fight they can win, than one they can't. They'd rather have no fight at all but that decision lies with Musk alone

How are Apple going to measure breaches now though? Twitter has always been a shithole of hate and racism. Why didn’t they give it the boot before?

Child Sexual Abuse takes it into a whole new ballpark

They can all hide behind first ammendments rights to a degree on most things and if there's no political will to challenge that, nothing will happen. Before Musk at least Twitter was making the right sort of moves, banning the likes of Trump etc now, Musk has allowed them back so moves were being mooted straight away because of that alone

Allowing and enabling child abuse and child sexual abuse crosses the rubicon though and decimating your worldwide staff that deal with that means not only are those behaviours being enabled (regardless of what Musk says) but the penalties are actually far worse too.

Just remember when governments around the world attempt to censor the internet further, it was probably Musk that pushed them into it. He'll achieve the opposite of what he claims to have set out to do.
